WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 25. 1954 HERALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON PAGE THIRTEEN ussia BERN, Switzerland Wl Russia unveils today the results of two years of dedicated, almost mili tary-like drive to rival the United R I lit r Slates as the dominating world power in the 1956 Olympic track t and field games. , ' The scene is Neufeld Stadium site of the five-day European Athletic Championships, to wru MS track and field st3rs from 28 countries have been drawn. The Soviet Union will field ; ftam ot 74 men and women. The r men appear almost certain of , three championship?. The women actually may run off with every title and should place one, two, ', three in many. But the greatest Interest of Western onlookers centers not so much on .well-known . . individual Soviet stars as on the Russian depth in every event. A country may enter only two in each event and Russia looks .pow erful enough to place high in every , one of the 24 contests, which in clude two walks and two relays. To Russians, athletics have a political tinge and "outstripping the capitalist world has its place on the cinder track as well as in the tractor factory." . These European championships could turn into an Iron Curtain triumph in sports. Czechoslovakia is bringing a squad headed by the great Emil Zatopek, world record holder in the 5,000 and 10.000 meters as well as a host of other distances. His compatriot Jiri Skoblif is a strong favorite to win the shot put. The Hungarians stand an excel lent chance of winning the ham mer with Olympic champion Jo seph Csermark, the discus with Ferenc Klic and the broad Jump with Odan Foldessy. Their 1.500 nian Sandor Rharos could upset Britain's four-minute miler Roger Bannister. Poland's Janusz Sitlo Is the choice in the javelin. The Rus sian trio of Leonid Shcheroakov in the hop, step and jump, Yurll Litucv in the 400 meters and Vasi li Kuznetsov In the decathlon are almost sure favorites. Other Rus sian victories are possible in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, 400-meter run, 110-meter hurdles, pole vault and 3, 000-metcr steeple chase. While trying to In terview the big Negro fighter one always has had the feeling that he was holding himself tightly in check, saying as little as he could without actually offending those who were probing his thoughts. This has been understandable to some extent, for Ezzard has been given some rough goings-over on the sports pages from time to time for his failure to fight up to expectations. These have hurl him, for he is a more intelligent and sensitive fighter than some, and his reaction has been to clam up except in the presence of cer tain intimates. It is from one of. these that we Lave received a report on what the challenger is thinking . as he trains for his . second shot at Rocky Marciano Sept. 15 in Yan kee Stadium. This is what Ez said to his friend: "I feel great, better than the last lime. You've either got it or you haven't. I had it the last time but I didn't use enough of it. I oidn't take advantage of the breaks. When I hurt him I iet him get away. It will be different this time. "I've made up my mind it won't go 15 rounds. I've never made pre dictions or boasted about what I could do in the ring, as you know. I was confident I could beat him the last time, and now I'm more confident I can knock him out. . "Always before there was loo much time. Time heals, but it can kill too. Salem scored five runs In the yth inning Tuesday night to beat Tri-Clty after throwing the game into overtime with a freak triple play in (he ninth. The triple killing came with the Braves Vic Buccola on second and Len Tran on first. Artie Wilson hit a lowliner fly caught bi Don Kellogg at third. Both runners thought the ball was trapped, however, and were off and running. Kellogg pegged to second but the throw was wide and went into right field. Right fielder Mel Krause, who also thought the ball was trapped, peg ged home trying to get Buccola. Second baseman Olenn Tuckett called for the ball, touched sec end and Buccola was called out, then Tuckett threw to first where Tran was thumbed out. Tri-Clty had men in scoring posi tions in the ' eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh innings but couldn't get them across.
