Death came to the former Pre mier as he rested here in his north Italy mountain retreat, far fom Rome and the political war in which he had battled without res pite for nearly a decade. His passing robbed the cause of European union of one of Its staunchest supporters. Italy's struggle against communism lost one of its hardest fighters. Although It was known the 73-year-old" leader s health was fail ing, there had been no public hint he was seriously ill. Only after hts death was It revealed that he had suffered a heart attack a week ago. His condition was not consid ered serious until Tuesday, when the heart pains became "more in tense. ATTACK He suffered another attack at 2 a.m. today and died an hour later after still another seizure. His family was at his bedside. De Gasperi had stepped down from the titular leadership of his pro - Western, middle-of-the-road Christian Democrat party Italy's largest a little more than a month ago. He ended his 8' 3 years as head of the Italian government a year ago, in July 1953, after losing a conl idence vote in the Italian Par liament. In recent years, how. ever, this stability began to crurn. ble under the nation's' chronic economic distress and deepening inroads by not only the Commu nists, but the Monarchists and Fascists as well. COALITION . In the 1953 parliamentary elec tions, De Gasperi's Christian Dem ocrats tried to capture a majority in the Chamber of Deputies but finally were forced to rely on an uneasy center coalition to hold pre carious control of lite government. On July 28, 1953, the combined opposition of Communists, Social ists. Monarchists and Fascists de feated De Gr-snerl bv a narrow margin of 282-263 on his bid in the Chamber of Deputies for a vote of confidence. Worn by eight stormy years of continuous political bat tling, the old man handed In his resignation to President Luigi EI naudi. He remained the dominant mem ber of his party but a little more tor.
