en to the Chinese Nationalists after
World War II.

1949 but Nationalist bombers sank

have been reports that the Commu
nists refloated her and took nor
to Port Arthur for refitting and

The mass evacuation of Viet
namese refugees from northern
Indochina began Tuesday when the
U.S. Navy transport Menard sailed
Irom Haiphong for Saigon with
about 2,000 men, women and child
ren. Six more U.S. ships, arrived at
Haiphong Tuesday to take part in
the vast humanitarian project
which Is being directed by Rear
Adm. L. S. Sabin, commander of
the U.S. Navy's amphibious group,
Western Pacific.
Two attack transports began
loading the next group of Viet
namese fleeing southward before
the Communists take over all cf
northern Viet Nam.
Two typhoons In the Japan-Okinawa
area have delayed the ar
rival of additional ships which will
participate In the operation, but
Navy spokesmen Tuesday ex
pressed confidence they will be
able to maintain a steady flow of
transports Into Haiphong.

The club held a very mteresting
meeting at Steven schmeck s home
July 28.
Four of the club members gave
reijorts on breeds of pigs. Bryaru
Williams told about the hogs
around this area, also how and
why pigs arc changing from a lard
type to a bacon type one mat is
longer and not so fat.
Conservation reports will be giv
en at the next meeting which will
be held at the home of Jackie
Warren, August 18. at 7:30 p.m.

The club had Its third weighing
tour on July 18. All calves were
looking good, highest gain being
3.3 lbs. Per day made by Joyce
Roberts' calf "Lucky." At the end
ol the tour members enjoyed a
picnic, later a free afternoon of
swimming, our thanks to Joe Po
lucek. Next meeting will be August 8
at Matin.

The girls and boys of our sheep
club are putting the finishing
touches on their projects and mak
ing big plans for the fair. We had
a meeting on Sunday. August 15.

pretty sure we will get to show
them and this way let the people

making a new sign for display at
the fair. They are also making
feeders and waterers. The Long
Bell Lumber Co. of Malln donat
ed lumber and made hay feeders
for us. We really appreciate this.

The Rotary Ciun memocrs were
down on a tour Thursday, August
5. We received much good infor
mation from them by asking ques
tions. We held our local tour for
our sheep club Wednesday. August
and discussed preparing our
sheep for the fair.
The Malln woolles are ready for
the 10th Annual FFA and 4-H Club
Junior Livestock show at the Klam
ath Fairgrounds August 22-24, and
we hope to bring home many rib
bons.

at the annual get-together and picnic at Fort Klamath August 14-15 and his sister, Mrs. Clara
Collman, Klamath Falls were both born at Fort Klamath. Mrs. Collman, the first white child
born in the town was born in 1883, her brother two years later. They are son and daughter
of a United States Cavalryman, Solon Obil Shattuck and his wife Theodocia Shattuck. Their
father homesteaded at the fort at the end of the Modoc War,
Army Enlistment Policy Reported
The U. S. Army Is continuing
its policy of enlisting high school
graduates for specific schooling,
according to M-Sgt Claude Miller,
local army recruiter.
Under this policy the enlistee is
guaranteed a school of his choice
prior to enlisting.

Army Announces
Bonus Increase
The new reenlistment bill an
nounced recently will be a boon
to personnel in the U. S. Army,
according to information by MSgt
Claude Miller, local army recruit
er. Under the provisions of the bill
men and women recnllsting for the
first time will receive a bonus
equal to one months pay for each
year of their enlistment.
The second reenlistment will re
ceive a bonus equal to two thirds
of a months pay for each year en
listed and the third reenlistment
will receive one third of a months
pay per year enlisted.
To take advantage of this hew
bonus a person must reenhst with
in 90 dnys after discharge or re
lease. Recnlistments niny be for
a period of three, four! five or
six years.
