The Hollywood Stars can thank
their former teammate, Chuck
Stevens, for being 2 . games in

Stevens, who played first base
for many years in Hollywood liv
ery, was sold to the Seals early
this seat-on and has been used
mainly in a pinch hitting role.
Thursday night he stepped to the
plate in the ninth innintj with two
runners on base and ban Fran
cisco trailing 5-4. He connected
for his first home run of the year
to give the Seals a 7-5 victory.
Ted Lyons, recently released by
the Seals, relieved Bob Kerrigan
in the ninth Inning. Kerrigan was
charged with the loss.
The Padres jumped away 'to a
4-0 lead in the firt inning as the
league's leading swatsmith, Har
ry Elliott, socked a homer wuh
the bases loaded. Luke Easter al

Lefty Tommy Byrne pitched Se

Angeles. He was pretty much the
whole show, hitting a home run
for the first Seattle run in the

until the fifth, when the Angels
bunched two hits for their run.
It was Byrne's 15th win. He
gave up only four hits, while his
motes were combing Bobby Spiccr,
Turk Lown and BUI Misan for 11.
It was the ninth consecutive vic
tory for the Ruiniers over the An
gels, who won the first four games
between these teams.

performing famous John Landy
Thursday in the mile trials at the
British Empire Games.
Murray mRy bow Saturday to
the power that is latent in the
legs of the mighty, when Bannister
and Landy wage the duel that the
world has been awaiting since they
cracked the 4-minute barrier in
separate tests earlier in the year.
But the Empire Games mile
Saturday will be men against men
instead of men against the clock
and the little Auckland school-,
teacher has proven himself a man.
Murray went out and set the pace '
in the first heat of Thursday's;
trials they called it the "Bannis
ter heat" and he was still out
there -in front when the timers
clicked the clocks and read them
at 4 minute, 7.4 seconds. j

fect her chance for acceptance as
a world holder. Marjorie has a
previous 24-seond time up for con
sideration. An effort equalling a world
standard was turned in by Edna
Maskell of Northern . Rhodesia
when she skimmed over the C0
meter hurdles in 10.9 seconds.
This was disallowed immediately
because of the breeze. Miss Mask
ell said she didn't care, that the
gold victory medal was honor
