Riley becomes a grand father, he will be able to retire on his cut from "The Life of Riley." But, being an actor, WH Ham Bendix will not retire. "Because," explains Bendix, star of the perennial Riley series, "what good Is an actor unless he Is acting?" Riley made his bow on radio 10 years ago last January and con tinued for eight years on the air. Court Seeks Interpreter Alfonso Torres. 28-year-old Mex ican wetback who shot up the Hallway House in Bly Sunday and seriously wounded an Innocent by stander because he was told to "speak English or shut up," ap parently can't speak either Eng lish or Spanish. This appeared to be the situa tion Wednesday afternoon when he was arraigned before District Judge D. E. Van Vaotor on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. Two Interpreters were unable to converse with Torres. rinalls', Judge Van Vactor gave tip trying to conduct the arraign ment and ordered Torres to appear again next Monday. In the mean time, District Attorney Frank Al derson was Instructed to find some one to act as interpreter who can understand Torres and vice versa. In the meantime, surgeons at Klamath Valley Hospital were still waging a desperate battle to save the lite of Leon E. Jenkins, 32-year- old Weyerhaeuser Timber Co., em pove. who was shot In the chest during the barroom battle at Bly. One of five bullets fired by Torres hit Jenkins as he was standing at' the bar talking to a friend. Jimmy Anderson, Sheriff Murray Brltton says, who had or dered Torres to speak English, at tacked the Mexican with a knife after his gun Jammed. Torres throat was slashed and he was also cut about the face and body. Torres was served with a war rant charging him with assault with a dangerous weapon Wednesday morning at Klamath Valley Hospi tal. He was then transferred to the county Jail where he Is held In lieu of 12.500 bond. 'Rain Crew' Awaits Storm WAYNESBURG. Pa. ITl A "rain crew" took up a vigil promptly at 12:01 a.m. today to record the slightest precipitation in this southwestern Pennsylvania community of 8.000. The crew, says Attorney John Dally, will stay on duty at the courthouse steps until midnight to night tt necessary to keep faith with Waynesb'jrg's tradition. The tradition goes back to 1811 when someone, for reasons best known to himself, said IV would rain on July 2 and it did. Since then, according to Daily's statistics, it has failed to rain July 29 on only seven occasions. In many cases, Daily admits, the rain has Just been a sprinkle but that was enough to keep the tradition alive. Somewhere along the line Dally became "chief rain prophet." And. somefthere along the line, the Chamber of Commerce thought It would be a good Idea to pub liciie the tradition. For the past few years Daily has been In the custom of wagering a hat with some celebrity that it would rain. He has quite an accumulation of headsear now. So many. In fact, he doesn't bet hata anymore. This yesr s "fall guv," la Bill Corum. sporls writer and president of Churchill Dnwns where betting, especially on Derby Day. la tome what of a tradition Itself. H It does not rain. Corum has promised to make Dally an hon orary Kentucky colonel. If Dally loses, he says Corum will become the unofficial chief rain prophet. KIDNAP TUNIS. Riley and his family are completing their 104th TV show. ' The series has paid well and will continue to do so. In addition to his salary, Bendix has a 25 per. cent interest in he show on re runs. Re-plays of the scries may well go on for years and years, In TV areas that have not' seen the show via network and in other cities and hamlets where stations are yet to be built. And with dubbed voices, they could, and probably will, go on in foreign countries for the next 50 years. . "That is," cautions Bendix. "un. less we run smack into color. What then? I don't know. I'm afraid, alter TV converts to color, that people won't want to look at black and white any more." Any actor who looks down his nose at television Is off his rocker, Bendix believes. The work is easi er and there's more money to be made. Bendix likes the work because each film requires only three days work. In the fall, when filming resumes, the company wilt work six straight days, making two films each week, and then lay off for a week. That, says Bendix, is wonderful. But not half so wonderful as the job he had for two and a half years as one of the inexplicable Howard Hughes' contract actors. Let Bendix tell It: "Word suddenly came, 'sign Ben dix.' and when Howard Hughes gives an order. RKO Jumps. I don't know, because I've never talked to Hughes, why he suddenly decided he had to have Bendix. I signed up after a little haggling for a straight four years, and no options, at a big salary. Well. It was J2.00O a week for 208 weeks. "Afler a few months I played a small part In a picture. Worked seven days. A few months more and I worked In another picture, for 11 days. Every week I got $2,000 for nothing. Then this TV series got hot. We always were trying to get ahead with 'RUeys' i because I never knew when I . might get a picture call. After all. . I was getting a lot of money and . if I was called to work, I had to go. But the strain became too much. I either had to quit Riley or Hughes. "So after two and a half years and 18 days' work I got released from the contract. I had collected $260.000 but for what?
