This Is their first child, ine baby weighed 8 lbs., 5 oz He is the first grandchild of Dr. and Mrs. Wayne Esperson and of Mrs. Tim Sullivan and the late Mr Sullivan all of Klamath Falls. Sullivan is in the service Visitor To , Red China Questioned WASHINGTON 11 Sen. Jenner R-Ind) said Wednesday he will make a formal request to the State Department for the passport appli cation signed last summer by Wil liam H. Hinton on his return from six years in Communist China. Hinton, a 35-year-old agronomist from Putney, Vt., Tuesday refused to tell the internal security sub committee, headed by Jenner, whether he is a memuer of the Communist Party. He testified un der oath that "of course I have never engaged in espionage." He also declined to answer ques tions concerning alleged Commu nist activities of his sister, Joan Hinton, who is now In China, he testified, working on a dairy farm. Jenner called Hinton's story "one of the most startling I have ever heard." When Hinton left China last sum mer, he said, he was on the pay roll of the Communist government at "close to $75 monthly." He described his job this way: "I went out to China in 1947 originally as a member of the Church of the Brethren service . commission tractor unit, a part of the United Nations Relief and Re habilitation program. "I spent the years from 1947 to 1953 on the Chinese mainland work ing chiefly in the field of agricul ture. I trained students in the op eration and care of tractors and combines and in the care and feed ing of dairy cattle." When Hinton left China last sum mer, he testified, he took the Trans-Siberian Railroad from Pei ping to Prague, Czechoslovakia, leaving his .wife and daughter be hind in China. Since his U.S. pass port had expired, he said, he sought a renewal from the U. 8. consulate at Prague. Copco Raises Mills Voltage Conversion of California - Oregon Power lines from 4,000 to 11,000 volts in Mills Addition of Klamath Falls as part of a dis tribution improvement program, was announced today by Bam "Kltchey, - district - manager- of Copco. The work will probably be completed within two weeks. The conversion to higher volt age is to deliver adequate service to the present population and in anticipation of future population expansion. A similar conversion program is to be undertaken in the Hot Springs Addition in the near future. Review "The Merry Wives of Windsor," one of the plays to be presented during the Shakespear ean Festival in Ashland, will be reviewed by Anthony Giacomini, Monday evening, August 1, at the Merrill recreation hall. Time is It p.m. Refreshments will follow the review. Everyone Interested is invited. Mrs. Oren Storey has been called to Chico by the death of her father, A. J. Williams, a one time resident of Klamath County. Merrill Mr. and Mrs. Frank Howard of Merrill have received word of the birth of a daughter, Marilyn Patricia, on July 18, to Mr. and Mrs. Everett Martin of Olympia, Washington. Mrs. Mar tin is the former Barbara Howard. Service Permit of Violet Van dendoel Bradley, Klamath Falls, was ordered suspended by the Ore gon Liquor Control Commission for 15 days, according to announce ment by the commission. U.S. Promises Aid To Egypt CAIRO.- Egypt Wl Ths United Sietes has promised a substantial military and economic aid pro gram for Egypt to start In the near future as a result of her Suez base agreement with Britain, in formed sources, said Wednesday. For the last three years Egypt has been getting only comparative ly small Point Four technical as sistance from the United Slates. Ambassador Jefferson Caffery pluyed a leading role in the behind-the-scenes talks which led to the British-Egyptian agreement Tuesday night. One of the unwritten commit ments to Egypt in return for. the base agreement, an info rm e d source said, is a quick start on American military and economic aid. Calfery was reported ex changing cables with the State De partment on the subject, urging a start as soon as possible. Veterans Park Bids Awarded Irl a special meeting of the city pork board Tuesday afternoon, bids were opened on three items for the future development of Vet erans Memorial Park.v A split was awarded on the pump house and sprinkler system. G. C. Motley Company, low Did der, on the pumo. intake feed and .foundation, was awarded that con tract at 53,770. Card Plumbing Co. won the contract for the sprinkler system at a low bid of $5,975. Specifications were let for two separate plans for the sprinkler system: using cast iron pipe in the main line and galvanized pipe for the branches: a second plan using cast iron pipe for the main line with plastic pipe from Klamath's own Carlon Products for branch lines. None of the three bidders sub mitted prices on the second plan. A suggestion that bids be held open to allow more time for bids on this alternate plan was dis missed after considerable discus sion and the bids were referred to a committee for the final action. Contract for concrete curbing at the park on Klamath Avenue was awarded to Ray Billings, low bid der at $1,458.70. The only other bid for the 635 feet of curbing and 65 yards of excavation was from H. A. Sample Co. at $1,553.78. Six bids were received on a tractor for the park board. The bids were referred to a committee for complete auditing. Contract will be awarded at the regular park board meeting Tuesday, Au gust 3. 1 -v 4 JERRY FIELDING, a top light maestro, will be at the Armory Monday under the auspices of Impresario Baldy Evans. Also slated for the night's entertainment are the Gaylords and Don Cornell.- Woman leses Slander Suit SALEM Wl A Portland woman failed Tuesday to collect any dam ages in her slander suit against her employer, who fired her for misconduct. Mrs. Alton W. Cribbs sued Mont gomery Ward ti Co. for $50,000, but the Supreme Court upheld a Multnomah Circuit Court Jury's award that she wasn't entitled to anything. The high court's decision, by Justice Hall S. Lusk. upheld the Jury in the court of Judge James R. Bain. In another opinion, the Supreme Court ruled that John Pierson. who died in Grant County, was men tally incompetent when he made a will leaving his estate to Eva Fletcher, operator of a rest home. The suit to break the will was brought by John and George Pier son, nephews of Pierson. The decision reversed Circuit Judge M.W. Wilkinson, who heard tne case in Grant County. Changed EDC Plan Studied WASHINGTON Wl Sen. Know- land (R-Callf) Wednesday prom ised early Senate consideration for a chart of a possible alternative to the European Defense Community (EDC) as a means of rearming West Germany. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee recommended unani mously Tuesday a resolution ap proving in advance steps President Elsenhower might take "consist ent with United States constitu tional processes to restore sover eignty to Germany and to enable her to contribute to the mainten ance of international peace and se curity." Chairman Wiley (R-Wis) said the committee's action, taken in closed session with Secretary of State uunes present, represents "a re minder that the legislative branch feels that on the European stage something must be done one way or the other." Record Heat Hits Texas By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Texas was the nation's hot spot again Tuesday with temperatures of more than 100 degrees. Del Rio had 110 and Laredo 109, both new records for July. Cooling temperatures were re ported across the north central states. ' There were scattered thunder showers in the central Rockies and most of the western high plains states. A hali and windstorm hit East ern Colorado, causing damage to homes, crops and buildings. Some areas had about two inches of rain in a short period. Showers and thundershowers were reported Wednesday in the central plains states, the upper Mississippi valley and upper Great Lakes region, with scattered show ers also in New York state and norma.
