The Council voted last April to disband its preparedness machin ery. One H-bomb on the city, they said, and there wouldn't be any body left to rescue anybody else anyway, ' ' Personal appeals by Home Sec. retary Sir David Maxwell Fyfe lanea to move the Council, so last week the government stepped In and appointed three outside offi cials to form a commission and run the show. It has all worked out nice and smoothly. The government keeps civil defense going in Coventry and the Council has registered its protest. The only people likely to be not so pleased about the whole business are the local taxpayers. Getting three top officials in from Loqdon is going to add a penny or two to the local taxes. Wl Ex-banker Royall Reynolds, whose disappear ance last March brought sleepy Clio, Ala,, awake with a start, goes on trial today on embezzlement charges, Reynolds' disappearance tied up funds In the now-defunct unchart ered Merchant's Money Exchange at. the critical spring planting per iod. He returned two Weeks later. An audit showed a $75,000 deficit in the bank's funds. A citizens' committee agreed to accept a settlement under which depositors would get back all ex cept about 10 to 15 per cent of their money. Reynolds liquidated all his personal holdings and his relatives chipped in Lto make up all except about $9,000 of the deficit. Here's Alaska Cable Job Started SEATTLE Wl Construction Is underway on a $6,750,000, 370-mlle underwater cable system linking Skagway and Ketchikan and other Alaskan points, the Army an nounced Monday. When completed, the new cable Is expected to be joined at Ketchi kan with an 800-mile, 15 million dollar Fubmarine cable planned by the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. to furnish additional communications between the south east Alaska town and Port An geles, Wash. Both the Signal Corps and AT&T systems are expected to be com pleted by late 1956 and will pro vide a capacity of 36 telephone circuits, the Army said. Telehpne service between Alaska and the United States Is now handled over 14 radio and land Una circuits operated by the Alaska Communication System, a branch of the Army Signal Corps. Certain of these facilities will con tinue to be operated as a supple mentary system. The ACS now provides long-line communications throughout Alaska and between the territory and the United States, The system com prises some 45 separate stations vhich furnish direct telephone and telegraph service to all major cities in Alaska and to all mill, tary Installations there. Huge Brush Fire Rages AUSTIN, Tex. 1,11 A gigantic brush fire, roaring through 6,000 to 6,000 acres of pine and post oak southeast of here, burned into its second week today. But a fire that cut a 2.000-acre swath out of cedar brake and brush country 20 miles northwest of the state capital was believed "generally under control" after de stroying three homes in the Lake Travis area last night. The roaring lires, visible for miles last night, added smoke and eye-smarting cinders and ashes to drought harried central Texas' miseries. The blazes flared to majo size last night after a day of 109-degree temperatures in this region, with out normal rainfall for months. The state highway patrol said some 250 volunteers had the fire around Dodd City, lake resort com munity to the northwest, under "general control" before 10 p.m. last night.
