Wl Merchants and others in this com munity of 1,100 were stunned yes terday when they went to their town's only bank and lound it closed. Bank Commissioner Elmer T. Beck said bank losses would exceed 1310.000. The doors of the Farmers and Merchants State Bank were closed following a week's investigation by state bank examiners. Depositor; had no hint that anything wa3 wrong. Beck said John W. Basore. the bank's president, had admitted irregularities and had promptly re signed. After announcing the probable loss. Beck said he would have no further comment until his report is complete. Some merchants were ' caught with Saturday and Sunday receipts and no place to immediately put them. Some of them had a hard lime rounding up change so they could open up this morning. L. R. Beny, hardwore store opcr ntor, said gloomily, "I might as : well have stayed closed today. No one wonted to buy anything. They just wanted to talk about the bank." j There have been no arrests or charges filed. County Atty. Warner Moore was trying to find Basore, who he said had not been at the bank all day and was not at bis home. Beck said the bank Is not pro tected by the Federal Deposit In surance Corp. DRUM MAJORETTE with fhe Klamath Falls American Legion Drum Corps is Sharron Sue Schwanmiller 14-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Schwarzmiller, who have ust moved here from Everett, Washington. Featured in Who's Who in Baton Twirling '52 Sharron has twirled for the Snohomish, Washington, High School band and for tho Earl Faulkner Post No 6 Drum and Bugle Corps at Everett for two years. Her father, who is with Modoc Lumber Company, has transferred to the local drum corps. They left Sunday for Coos Bay for the state American Legion convention. Sharron will enter KUHS as a sophomore in September. Indian Roads Plan Announced WASHINGTON Ufi Washington, Oregon and Idaho will share in a 10-milllon dollar program for im proving and maintaining Indian reservation roads announced Mon day by Secretary of the Interior McKay. Allocations proposed in the pro gram include $850,000 for the three Northwest states. The program was outlined in a request to Congress for a supple mental approproation of $3,900. 000. The Interior Department said It already has $2,897,000 for road con struction and $2,043,000 for main tenance on reservations. In addi tion, it also plans to use contract authority totaling $1,161,000 pro vided by the Federal Aid Highway Act. Grasshoppers Cover Big Area ROOSEVELT, Ltah Wi County commissioners met in emergency session yesterday to draft an ap peal to Gov. J. Bracken Lee for help as hordes of Grasshoppers devastated a 20,000-acre area in Duchesne and Uintah counties of eastern Utah.. .... Grasshoppers were reported "two to three inches deep" in some ltelds and eating everything in sight. Drunk Offers Unusual Plea COLUMBIA, S.C. UH David Joyncr's unusual plea on a drunk enness charge paid off In City Court here yesterday. He admitted he was drunk but said he was on his way to church. "At least," said the judge, "you were headed in the right direction. So drunk or sober, I'm going to suspend your sentence." Town Celebrates 200th Anniversary TANEYTOWN, Md. W!
