He WANTS 10 KNOW Fire Destroys FORT ROCK - Fire destroyed (he ranch home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mattls at Fort Rock about 10:30 a.m., July 14. Cause of the fire Is unknown. When Mrs. Mattls stepped out of the house she noticed the roof on firr and called the Fort Rock store for help. Mrs. Mattls was home alone with her two boys, Max and Mike, who had Just recently re turned from the hospital and were convalescing from their recent Ill ness. The strike vote Is In progress, said V, J, Herbert, ALAA acting president, also because West Coast Air Lines refused to submit the controversy to arbitration for the newly organized station employes. All of the procedures of the Rail way Labor Act beginning with dl. rect negotiations in November, 1953, through mediation from March 29, to June 10, 1954, to an offer of arbitration by the media tor assigned to the case by the National Mediation Board have been carefully followed, said Her bert. Rock Home equipment rushed to the ranch Help arrived too late to save the house, but corrals and adjoining buildings were saved. Help also came from the Cabin Lake ranger station and ranchers who had seen the smoke. No personal belongings were saved except two parakeets and a few legal papers. Value of the loss is unknown at this time as many valuable items such as guns and Indian relics, collected by Mattls, were lost. The Fort Rock Orange and local residents, are planning a benefit dance for the Mattis family , this Saturday night. West recently assumed duties as pastor of the Stewart Lennox Baptist Church fol lowing the transfer of the Rev. T. T. Smith to Drain. The Rev. West, originally from Mississippi, was educated at Mis sisippt state College. Following his e d u c a 1 1 o n, he served one year as pastor of West Salem First Baptist Church In Mis sissippi. Since then he has served Boy Drowns In Sandy River PORTLAND im The swift cur rent of the Sandy River broke an arm-to-arm chain of YMCA boys trying to wade across and swept Donald Maust, 8, Portland, to his death Friday. The boy -was carried 150 feet downstream where he disappeared. According to sheriff's deputies the Maust youth r.nd 26 other boys from a YMCA camp about five miles east of Gresham were waa ing the river on a trail trip ac companies by counselors. The current knocked seven of the boys loose from the human chain. Six clung to Arlan Walker, 21, Portland, a counselor stationed down stream, who walked them to safety, but Donald was carried away. Dennis Bunett and Michael Sweeney, two other counselors from Portland, made the crossing with the rest of the group. Dragging operations to recover the body were resumed Saturday. The victim was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hcrschel Maust.'
