OREGON WEDNESDAY, JULY 14, 1954 Hollywood Increases Lead With Shutout Over Beavers TIME OUT Br THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The Hollywood Stars have in creased their Pacific Coast League lead over San Diego to 3 'i games. The Stars whipped Portland Tuesday night, 11-0, while Los Angeles downed San Diego, 5-2. Linoso Donoso, the sltclc Cuban southpaw who came to the Stars this year from the Mexican " League, posted his 14th win against three losses. He now Is the league's top hurler and he looks like a cinch to win rookie of-the-year honors, barring Injury to his trowing arm. He fanned eight Portland batters, scattered seven hits, and was In command of the situation all the way. It was his eighth shutout. Portland, which had held some sort of jinx over the Stars all , season, didn't get much in the way of pitching, as Hollywood slammed three hurlers for 16 hits, one double and the rest singles. The Los Angeles victory lifted (he Angels out of the PCL cellar, even If only by one percentage point. Portland slumped into last place. Seattle and Oakland divided a ooubleheader, the Oaks taking the opener, S-l as Chris Van Cuyk gained the decision over Lefty Gene Bearden. Bearden gave only three hits to five by Van Cuyk. Vern Klndsfather bested Bill Up ton in the second game, which was s slugfest, Seattle winning, 7-6 Gene Hermanskl's grand slam homer was the big one for the losers. Seattle's tie-breaking run came In the eighth as Artie Wil son singled, advanced on a sacri fice and scored on Kindsfather's blow to left field which Herman . ski bobbled. Eddie Chandler, a Los Angeles castoff, pitched San Francisco to a 4-1 decision over Sacramento. The Chiefs hopped on two Van couver chuckers lor 14 nits, in cluding tiirce triples. In posting their second half victory. Charley Oubre limited the Caps to six safeties. Salem, Edmonton and Lewiston also hit the win column. Salem shaded Trl-City 3-2 be hind 4 hit pitching by John Briggs; Lewiston clubbed Victoria 13-8 and Edmonton dumped Ynk- ima 7-5. Vancouver got three hits off Oubre in the first inning but the veteran righthander spaced the other three over the distance. Oubre also hit one of the three triples credited to the Chiefs. Ross McCormick and Gerry Green got the others. McCormick also doubled and Green had two singles. It was the first win for Wcn atchee since the Chiefs swept a July Fourth doublehcadcr with Victoria, The Chiefs dropped the next two games, closing the first half of the split season, and the first seven games of the second half. Getting back to the first one, the only possible reply has to be reluctant yes. The nation's fans for the moat part are terribly tired of seeing the Yankees win year after year. So are seven other clubs in the American League. But there appears to be nothing any. body can do about It. There is no obvious reason why the Giants should not maintain their present pace, or something approximating same, if they keep away from the Pittsburgh Pirates The club has enjoyed some luck, true, in pulling a lot of games from the fire in the late innings, but that is accepted as the hall mark of a good, sound outfit, which the Giants are. In assessing the Dodgers' chances, there are some interest ing figures to be considered. A year ago at this time the club. which was to clinch the pennant earlier than any other team in Na tional League history, had won 52 games and lost 31. Its standing to day was 51-32, or a difference of only one game. That does not seem to indicate that the team managed by fresh man Walt Alston has exactly come apart. All the present standings in dicates, actually, is that the Dod gers have one outstanding team arrayed against them this time, the Giants, whereas last year they had to beat only one good club.
