Neuberger have been going over results of the primary . election with the proverbial fine tooth oomb, They hope to come up with eluea to strategy tor the fall campaign. Aa could have been expected, both sides are claiming Batlsfao ' tlon from the primary figures. Republicans note that Senator Cordon beat Neuberger by 33,453 votes statewide, took 30 of the 36 counties and polled a higher per centage of the Republican voto than Neuberger did of the Demo cratic vote 4.1.S per cent as against 34.1 per cent. Neuberger's backers have been publicising the amount of the write- Way Cleared ' For Cordon Senate Post WASHINGTON I The way apparently is clear now for Sen. Cordon (R-Ore) to become chair man of the Senate Interior Com mittee. Sen. Mllliktn (R-Colo) confirmed Wednesday that he will not exer cise his seniority on that commit tee over Cordon, the next ranking Republican member. Instead M1U1 kin will retain his chairmanship of the Finance Committee, Senate custom forbids a member to bead more than one committee. In vote: 1,496 on, the Republican ballot, 33 on the Democratic bal lot. The actual vote count In the state was 164,988 for Senator Cor don, 131.936 for Neuberger. This means that Senator Cordon led Neuberger by more than U per cent of the total vote. Democrats point out, that they had no active contests on their ballot to attract voters, but that the Republicans had two such the gubernatorial battle between Governor Paul Patterson and the third district congressional flight between Tom Lawson McCall and Congressman Homer Angell. Patterson and McCall emerged victorious, and there is no doubt they increased the vote on the Re publican side. However, Senator Cordon polled 18,177 more votes than were cast for Governor Pat terson, and the governor chalked up 14.676 more votes than Neu berger's total. Much Is being made in Neuber ger quarters of the 1.495 write-in votes on the Republican ballot. Presumably, most of these votes were cast for the Portland writer. The votes are credited to the ex tensive campaign by Neuberger's brother-in-law, James W. Goodsell, editor of the Oregon Labor Press. Goodsell frequently urged Repub lican readers of his paper to write in Senator Cordon's opponent. No campaign was conducted by Senator Cordon's supporters to at tract Democratic write-ins. In other words. Senator Cordon with no write-in campaign re ceived almost as high a proportion of the Democratic vote as Neuber ger did of the Republican vole. The write-in Is considered to be Inslgnlilcant by Republicans, They feel that it demonstrates the falla cy of the belief that certain groups such as the labor vote can be "de livered" In a block. Republicans are, counting on the traditional In dependence of American voters and the appeal of the GOP program to people of individualist leanings. Republicans also showed Inter est in returns from Clackamas County, This county was the only one of the Oregon end California Land Grant counties to oppose Senator Cordon's solution to the long O. & C. dispute. Clackamas hired A. W. Lafferty to pursue its opposition and continued the tight even after passage of the senator's administrative bill, and in spite of the tact that the bill contained the same distribution formula that Laf ferty won in the Washington, D. C. district court. Clackamas County also Is the home ground of Monroe Sweetland, one-time candidate for Socialist delegate from Oregon. Sweetland put his newspaper, the Milwaukle Review, solidly behind Neuberger. Senator Cordon took Clackamas County by more than 1,500 votes. The count was 10,635 to 9.110. Neuberger won in six counties Baker, by 110 voles (1,335 to 1.150 ; Columbia, by 335 votes (1,814 to 1.6191; Coos, by 4M votes (3.967 to 3.301); Union, by 314 votes (3.339 to 1,913), and Mult nomah, by 3,454 votes (55,730 to 63,366). Senator Cordon's lead over Neu berger In the 30 counties the Sen ator took was 89 per cent greater than was Neuberger's lead In his six counties.
