Guatemala W An affable young rebel .pilot is credited with waging a one-man air war that helped blast Guatema lan President Jacobo Arbenz Guz man and his Communist friends out of power. The airman whose identity is a closely guarded secret played havoc with Arbens' forces from a tiny Cessna singte-engined plane whose designer never dreamed it would be used as a dive bomber. The pilot opened his air cam paign the day the rebel invasion began June IS by swooping low over Guatemala's port of San Jose. He riddled fuel tanks with machine gun bullets, sending up In flames much of Arbens' fuel supply and forcing the government to put a quick ban on use of gasoline by private cars. Later the young airman sneaked in over Guatemala City and blasted the army's main garrison of Msta moros. A few days ago, he zoomed over a government troop train speeding reinforcements from the capital to the embattled city of Zacapa. He stopped the train with a few well- placed bombs then proceeded to strafe soldiers fleeing from the wrecked cars. On some missions the pilot took along a bombardier. The latter leaned out of the window when the little plane passed over the target and tossed out a bomb. Sometimes a 30-pound fragmen tation bomb was used, but more often the missile consisted of' sev eral sticks' of dynamite wrapped around s grenade. A string wss tied to the grenade. However, the National Safely Council has estimated there will be 430 persons killed In motor mis haps In the 78 hour period from 6 p.m. yesieraay to mianignt Mon day. The Council also estimated 44 million cars will be on the high ways during the holiday period. First reports of violent deaths showed four killed in traffic acci dents and four by drowning. Traf fic fatalities included two each in North Carolina and Alabama. Two drownings were reported in New Hampshire and one each in New York and Tennessee. There were 434 violent deaths in the three-day July 4 holiday last vesr. The record July 4 three-day vio lent death toll was 7t In IMS. The largest July 4 three-day traffic toll-was 366 in 1953.
