PAGE FOURTEEN American Legion Nine To Meet Grants Pass Couch John McGlnnls's Klam ath Falls American Legion base ball team will get It's second taste of league action this Sunday alter noon as the Cokes meet Drams Pass in a Recreation Park double header starting at 1:00. Last week the Cokes and Med ford split a doubleheadcr, with the local legion team winning the first game behind the shutout pitch ing of Dave O'Olivo 5-0, and Med ford came back to win the nightcap 10-3. So far this year, the Cokes hold a 3-1 record, with wins being regis teied over Bend twice, besides the Medford juniors, last week. O'Olivo and Modesto Jlmlnel will probably get the opening calls for the pitching chore against the Grants Pass Legion club, with Big Earl Tichenor standing by in re lief to case McOinnls needs his help. The catching chores will be cap ably hanlled by Bob Kelly and Jer ry Burke, two right-handed hitting receivers, who will also be ex pected to help the Cokes cause at the plate. Bob Harshbarger. the Cokes heavy hitting first baseman, and Orin Perkins will hold down the corner positions of the local legion infield, while the keyston combina tion will be completed by Jack Su nitsch and Butch Kimpton at sec ond and shortstop respectively. Three power hitters' will com prise the Cokes outfield as Don Taucher, Craig McCarty and Dave Leeling will cover the three outer defensive positions In the two seven Inning games. Besides these probable starters. Jerry Bramwell and infielder could possibly see some action, as well as SmUey Herrera, Kenny Detroit and Ken Jensen. ' So far this season the hitting de partment has been evenly divided with Harshbarger, Kelly, Taucher, McCarty and Leeling paving the way. -. - i ' Jackson Replaces S.L Star CHICAGO Mt Ransom Jack son of the Chicago Cubs Thurs day returned to the National League third base lead in the bal loting for the annual all-star game at Cleveland July 13. Jackson regained first-place by 12,233 votes over Ray Jablonski of the St. Louis Cardinals in the latest tabulation. Jackson had 548.- 259 to 536.026 for Jablonski. Larry (Yogi) Berra, New York Yankees catcher, held a 3.035 lead over Stan Musial of, the St. Louis Cardinals In the race for the poll's highest individual vote getting honors. Hollywood was idled by rain in Portland Wednesday night, but a look at the performance sheet dis closes that the team has collected only one homer in its last 13 game. San Diego whipped Los Angeles 5-1 as Bill Thomason twirled a steady game, scattering the seven hits he allowed the Angels. Los Angeles' only run came on a walk to Bud Hardin and singles by Bob Spicer and Gene Macuh. San Francisco whipped Sacra mento again. 8-1. as Tony Ponce steadied after allowing four hits in the first inning. Ponce notched his eighth win against eight losses, six of which were charged against him before he got his first win. The Oregon-California Border League teams all drew a bye this Sunday due to the fact that It Is the Fourth of July, but most of the teams will probably be play ing non-league games either Sun day or Monday. Manager Hi Hatfield will be using catcher Ron Owlngs for the first time In two weeks, and in fielder Kenny Young, outfielder Willie Dunster and relief pitcher Dick Lundsten will all be back hi uniform after missing the last two weeks of league play. The Eldroado ball club will still have to do some fast Juggling, even with the addition of the four ball players, because of the two injuries that struck the Lumber- Jacks in the Bend contest last week. Gary Dawes broke his ankle In three places, according to Hatfield, and will probably be out for the remainder of the season. The other injury, first diagnosed as a broken leg, turned out to only be a very bad sprain of Dick Pepple's leg. Dawes and Pepple were both outfielders, and when Pepple had to leave the game, batboy Kenny Bellum replaced him in as much as 'Jacks were shorthanded and had only nine ball players. Against Mt. Shasta. Hatfield will start either Fran Miller or Jojo George, the ex-Chiloquin High School pitching star, while Ron Owlngs will return to the catching position. Hatfield, who has been doing the catching, will move back to the outfield with any of the fol lowing outfielders, Irv Whitt, Dun ster, Miller, Lowell Schuck or Art Raymond. If Miller and Raymond go to the outfield, Whitt will probably get the call for first base, and Young might possibly get the starting nod for third base. The other two positions tn the Lumberjack infield will probably be filled with Do Sunltsch at sec ond base and Leroy Coleman will cover the shortstop position. Game time for the Monday after noon ball game is 1:00 and a 50 cents admission charge will be made for adults and children will be admitted free.
