MAXINE OLSON BusyYoman Aids GOC Introducing pretty Maxine Olson, 234S Vine, who, as a little girl, with ner brothers Jack and Lester, thrilled to the stories of the notori ous Jesse James, told by their great grandmother, Catherine Springer. Maxlne was born at Grants Pass, Oregon, March 18, 1923, and is the granddaughter ot one of the first families to settle in that city. When Maxlne became of school age she received the three R's" in the Grants Pass grade schools, then her family brought her to the Klamath Basin in 1936, and she finished her studies at Henley High. Good, clean sports, are a hobby with Maxlne, and in school she excelled In volley ball. But there Is always that "cupid" who lurks 'around the comer, and Maxine was not one to dodge the arrow's course! Clyde Olson was the man, they were married in Reno, September 11, 1941. A daughter, Betty Ann, Is their only child. Maxine likes people, and likes to belong to organizations. She joined the Neighbors of Wood craft, Ewauna Circle No. 647 in 1945 and now holds the office of Guardian Neighbor. She is presi dent of the Jolly Neighbors, a so cial group, and is a charter mem ber of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Soror ity. Her deft fingers helped make the Ground Observer Corps flag, recently presented to the GOC. Since February she has been an active member of the Ground Ob server Corps, also. Baldock, state highway engineer, announced Monday. Completion of a portion of the five-year highway construction program was given as the reason fcr the reduction. The construction of stronger and Wider highways, through the use cf $73,000,000 in bonds authorized bv the 1951 and 1993 Legislatures, reduces the maintenance require ments, Baldock said. Now, Maxlne hopes to earn the Merit Award metal, pre sented by the Air Force, for having given 250 hours or over, on two hour watches per week, in the tower, or, by having performed some outstanding service to her country as a ground observer. Max ine advises others to join the Ground Observer Corps, and sug gests they contact their nearest GOC Post, so they too, can become a part of this great civil defense program! took three men, all night watch' men from the pay rolls at the lo cal highway department head quarters, and three more layoffs are anticipated. Announcement of the change in policy came from Ray Betzer, su perintendent of the shop here. Betzer had no Information on the layoff, other than the announce ment made by R. H.
