Norblad Tells Of Jet Damage WASHINGTON W After-burners on Air Force jet airplanes are damaeinr the Portland airport runway. Rep. Walter Norblad (It Ore) said in a letter to Secretary of Air Talbott Sunday. Norblad told Talbott that damage to the asphalt topping had been estimated at more than a quarter million dollars. The Congressman asked Talbott to have his office make an investi gation "to determine If these planes would not be removed Irom operation there at Portland, or, if such use Is to be continued, that the Air Force undertake to prop erly protect the runways and provide Indemnity payments to the port.. .for damage already done there." FCC Approves New Springfield Radio WASHINGTON Wl W. Gordon Allen was -authorized by the Federal Communications Commis sion Saturday to operate a one kilowatt radio station during daylight hours at Springfield, Ore., on '1060 kilocycles. Allen also has radio stations it Lebanon and Salem, Ore. Three Eugene, Ore., stations had held up the grant with a protest that the new Springfield station would overlap an area covered by KSGA at Cottage Grove, Ore., in which Allen has owned a 70 per cent Interest. Allen has recently transferred bis Interest in KSGA to Orlo M. Bagley. He told the Anchorage Times Saturday he and others al ready have started the salvage operation. But in Seattle, a spokesman for the Alaska Steamship Co. dis puted Sumpter's report that the Yukon carried the gold bullion as a shipment . from a Fairbanks bank to Seattle. The company official. Sid Hay- men, said the sold never appeared on the Yukon's manifest and no claim for compensation ever had been made. The Yukon sank Feb. 3. 1MB with the loss of 13 lives. Young Wins Control Of NY Central ALBANY, N.Y. W Financier Robert R. Young was officially certified Monday as the winner nf the bitter war for control of the New York Central Railroad. The election inspectors an nounced that the 15-meinber slate of directors put up by the Young forces had won by a margin of 1.067.188 over the Central mana gement's present board, 4ieaded by President William White. The Young group received a to tal of 3.406.987 as agaln.il 3.339.- 71-9 for the management candi dates. White, who presided at the re convened session of the annual meeting of the stockholders, an nounced that "I will not remain as president of New York Central. I will nevertheless cooperalo with the new group in effecting an or derly transition." White, who received a salary of 1120.000 a year, was asked by a reporter whether he Intended to irslgn. He replied, "Do you think that is necessary?" He obviously was referring to a prior announcement by Young that the new alate of 14 men and one woman would meet in New York City late Monday afternoon and elect a new president.
