Dies Sunday
TULELAKE Samuel O. Phillips.
68, candidate for tax collector and
treasurer on the Republican ticket
in Modoc County, died at a:o a.m.
at the family home,. Sunday. May
30. He had not been 111 previous
to his death.
Mr. Phillips complained of feel
ing tired as he rose from bed and
died before medical help arrived.
He was a veteran of World War
I and homesteoded here In 132.
His filing for public office was bis
first venture Into politics.
He was a past commander of
Tulelake Post No. 1M, American
Legion, had served as finance offi
cer and helped with the financing
of the present Legion building. This
year he was also serving as chef
de guerre of the Klamath Falls
Volture, 40 and 8.

Kay Phillips, Tulelake, bis moth

Navy planned special memorial
services today for 100 seamen who
died Wednesday In a below-decks
explosion aboard the carrier Ben-blngton.
Services were scheduled on the
flight deck of the great, grey car
rier, now tied up at its Quonset
dock a grim reminder of 30-odd
sailors still fighting for life at New
port Naval Hospital.
The 100th victim Navy Lt. Rob
ert R. Wright, 34, of Marlboro
Mass. died last night and became
a double carrier-tragedy for his
wife, Rita.
Her brother, Lt. William A. Ga
gaa, perished in an explosion that
racked the carrier Leyte at Its
Boston dock last Oct. 26.
