Jean Hersholi To' Be Seen In Movie Role With Cagney Br BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD tfl For the first time in 17 years, Jean Hersholt Is parting company with Dr. Christian. , The great Dane is playing one of the leading roles in "Run tor Cover" with James Cagney, Vive- ca Lindlors and John Derek. It will be the first time since 1937 that the public has seen or heard him in any role except that oT the kindly Dr. Christian. "I want to see if I can set away with doing something else." says Hersholt. "After all, Dr. Christian Is such a sweet, sentimental lel - low. I'd hate to be stuck with play ing only him for the rest of my life. "Two whole generations have grown up knowing me as nothing else but Dr. Christian. Yet I have played in over 400 pictures and done every kind of role, includ ing many heavies." ADVICE LONDON Wl The independent, empire-minded Daily Express ad vised the British government Wednesday to shy off from buying any of America's surplus butter. He plays Miss Lindfors father, a stub born Swede who is a frontier farmer. I visited him at this Beverly Hills home, where he has lived for almost 30 years. He looked the same as ever, except that he had grown sideburns and a brush mustache for his film role. He re laxed in his. upstairs study, a room laden with medals and trophies, in cluding three honorary Oscars and awards from foreign countries. "I have no beef with Dr. Christian," he said, puffing on a pipe. "He has been very good to me. I was on radio every week. summer and winter, IB years with the same sponsor; I don't believe any other show can match that record." I asked him if Jean Hersholt and Paul Christian are the same person. I don t like to uunk so,- ne replied thoughtfully. "I like to think I have an identity of my own. The meeting was opened by our vice president, Douglas Fisk. The pledges and songs were then given. . The discussion of summer school and summer camp was brought up before the meeting. Diane Micka NEW 4-H CUB The first meeting of the Klamath County Wranglers, a 4-H horse club, was held at the fairgrounds Sunday May 9. The meeting was called to nrHcr by the leader Roy Drace. and the following officers appointed: Assis tant Leader. Sidney Kerns: Presi dent, Gary Curry: Secretary. Mary Gran as; vice president. Dick Dehlinger: treasurer. Hazel Jo De- Lemater. and club reporter Bobby U1BCC. Eight members were nresent tn discuss the coming summer events. Several rides and outings are planned. The next meeting will aln h held at the fairgroungs. Saturday May 29, at 3 p.m. Members are asked to ride their horses to the meeting. Membership in the club is open to anyone between the ages of t and 21 who has his own horse. Bobby Drace Nematode Control Discussed TULELAKE Much has been said about nematode in potatoes tills last winter tn this area. Among other control methods, the possi bility of killing the nematode em bedded in the potato tubers has been discussed. Numerous milrr ia!s to attempt this have be?n tried, with no appreciable success. However, it is common lor many growers to have their potato fed dipped and expect eradication o( nematode in the potatoes, states B. J. Hoylc. Last fall the Tulolake Field Station conducted an experiment using the potato dip as prescribed by local dipping vats. This treat ment consisted of using corrosive sublimate which is the com mon name of bi-cloride of mer cury. The treating of potatoes as recommended by the U.S. Depart ment of Agriculture is one part to one thousand parts of water. The treatment should be given at room temperature, from 60 to 10 degrees or lla hours. This treatment Is nown to be ef fective in killing the scab or ganisms and rhizoctonia or ganisms, but not nematode, as mentioned earlier some nematode Infested potatoes were dipped In mercury solution as indicated, but one lot of potatoes was dipped for three hours, which is twice the length of time for dipping. These potatoes were then taken to the university oi vaiuornia ai Berkeley for further study by Nematologlst Dr. W. M. Allen, and then nlanted In the green house and examined to see if the nematode was killed. The following excerpt is irom his report: "So far as we can de termine, the mercury dip did not kill nematodes inside the potato tubers. It was necessary for us to chop up these tubers and mix tm chopped material with soil, plant tomatoes, and examine the toma to roots for nematode infection. Both untreated and treated were found to produce infection on to mato Toots. There were fewer ne matodes on tomato roots grown in soU inoculated with the dipped tubers. However, this might have been due to a lighter infection in these tubers. The understanding was the wounded veteran on arrival tn the United States would telephone Ralph's parents and tell them Ralph was doing fine. Later Jones learned the call was never made. He wrote off his 410. Now he has it back. It happened that recently Postmaster Russell Ramsey received a. letter from a person asking for Jones' address. Ramsey sent it to the writer, who bad explained he recalled Jones' request while recently going through personal effects. In turn Jones got a letter and bis 410. Radford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, gives congressmen a secret insight today at the prob lems of creating a defense coali tion for Southeast Asia. Radford was called before the House Foreign Affairs Committee in closed session to outline the ad ministration's program for putting into effect Secretary of 8late Dulles' plan for united action to combat Communist aggression la the area. The admiral waa expected to ask formally for authority to use any where in Southeast Asia the (1.133,000.000 now earmarked for Indochina, primarily for military aid, for the year starting July 1. Air Force Plane Crashes In City NEWARK, Del: i,r)-An Air Force twin engine piano' crashed intu a lumber yard in downtown Newark last night and exploded Into a terrific blase. No one was Injured in the fire and both the pilot and copilot safely parachuted over the city. The C-4S explodrd on Impact and the flames, fed by a half million dollars worth of lumber, lciied 100 feet Into the air. The- two flyers were taken to the New Castle. County Air Force Base near Wilmington, 13 miles north east of Newark. A spokesman said there would be an Invcstlitatlon. The plane was on a routine non stop training flight from Mltchrl Air Force Base, Long Lsland, N.Y.. to Washington, D.C. and return. The pilot, Capt, Leroy U. Hansen , 33. of Salt Lake City.. Utah, said the ship suddenly devel oped engine trouble and when emergency measures failed, he and copilot Capt. Howard N. Franklyn, 33. of Medford, Mass., balled out.
