Fort Klamath Family Build In Restful Surroundings Ily MVIITLK WIMKB FORT KLAMATH Beckoning lo the weary motorist with a prom Iho of restful quiet, The Wilson Cottages are located In a natural ettlng of lolly pine five miles north of Fort Klamath, at the aoutliern entrance to Crater Lake National park, on atate highway 112. Eighteen miles north la beautiful Crater Lake, annual mecca for thousands of tourlala visiting this area. To the wait are Ooose Nest mountain and the timbered, anow capped slopes of the Cascades, while to the aouth the superb acenlo panorama of the Wood Ri ver valley and the Upper Klamath l.uko unfolds before the eyes ot vlsitora. The swift flowing waters of near by Annie Creek, within a stone's throw of the cottages, Invite ang lers to caat a hook and line In their depths lo lure the wary trout which abound in the clear, cold mountain alream with Ita aource In Crater Lake Park. The nearest neighbors, Mr. and Mis. Jack Thomas, live one half mile south, and as they are only home for the spring and summer, the Wilson Cottages are somewhat Isolated. The shy, curious wild deer of the surrounding forests, oc casionally Invade the grounds on which are situated 13 large iisjllvidual cottages, store and gas pumpa, owned and managed by Curl F. Wilson, hla brother and wile, Mr. and Mrs. Richard 11. Wilson. BK(i INNING The partnership of Wilson broth ers started back In 1B33 at their former business location at Band Creek station, on old highway 67 at the summit of Sun Mountain, and has continued through the years. In April 1932, the brothers were .Joined at Sand Creek by Richard's wife, Ada. Anna Vesta, Carl's wife, came there to live the following year. All four had gradu ated from college. Carl and Rich arcd majoring In their chosen fields of civil engineering and in dustrial arts at Oregon State Col lege, Corvallls. Anna Vesta, a na tive of Portland, clso attended Ore gon Stale majoring In secretarial work, in addition to being a gifted and accomplished vocalist and mu sician. Ada,, who halls from Vaahon Island In the Puget Sound, near Seattle, received her education at the University of Washing' ton, where she majored In librar ian work. Later on, sne worked in the reference library at Oregon State College, where she met her future husband. HOME KTATE The Wilson brothers are natives of Marquette, Michigan. At Sand Creek, a combined store, restaurant and living quarters, were built by the brothers in 1934. Nine new cabins and a service station were added later. In the spring of 1938, the business waa expanded when the present local property waa purchased from the owner, Leo Boyer, who had built one large building on the premises. which now houses the grocery store as well as the living quarters of Carl Wilson and family. Included In the sale, were the acres of the old Pomeroy homestead across the highway. Four new tourist cottages were built, gas pumpa installed, and the new business was opened by Carl and hla wife in 1038. During 1S39 and 1940, four additional cabins were finished. Then came the World War II interlude. During this time. In September of 1943. the Sand Creek business was discon tinued. Richard and his family Join ing his brother and wife at their present location. WORKED AWAY - January, 1943, Carl and Richard look defense Jobs in Portland, and the following May, Carl returned to Klamath and worked In Klamath Falls on the survey crew of the Oregon Slate Highway Department. September of the same year, Rich ard and family moved to Prtnevill:. where he taught Industrial arts at the Crook County high school for one year. In 1944, he started terch Ing mathematics and industrial arts at Chiloquin high school, and while on the laculty. he also drove the school bus between Fort Klam ath and Chiloquin for three .years. From March until May 1949, the Wilson Cottages were used as a aki camp by U.S. marines from the Marine Barracks In Klamath Falls. Another cottage was built In 194S. That year was marked by a sad event, the death ol Carl's wife, An na Vesta. She left her husband and two children. Carrel A. (Sandy), now 18, studying electrical engi neering at Oregon State College, and Oretchen, then an Infant, now nine and a pupil at Fort Klamath elementary school. Richard and Ada are parents' of thrco children, 13, 11, and 7 year old Janet Susan, David Bar ry and Robin Jon. The two brothers and Ada have handled the busi ness since the death of Carl's wife, with practically no outside assis tance. From 1948 until 1953. tour more cottages were built, bringing the total up to Its present number of 13. ' NEW IDEAS Several outstanding features com bine to make the Wilson brothers and their cottages unique. Lodge pole trees on the old Pomeroy tract were cut by the two men, hauled to their sawmill located back of the store building, and aawed Into lumber. The dried and finished pro duct was used with great skill and considerable Ingenuity to fashion furniture for all 13 cottages. Items made Include beds, luggage racks, tables, chairs, even original and clever wooden tiebacka for cottage curtains as well as sashes for the window panes. The Interior walls ot each cottage, are attrac tively paneled halfway up with varnished pine from the aame source, while shakes made In their sawmill form the exterior finish of the walls of each cottage. Over the years, three different snow plows have been built, by HOTELS OSBURN HOLLAND EUGENE, ORE. MEDFOKO Thoroughly Modern Mrs. J, B. Barley Joe Barley Jr. Proprietors . Wilson brothers from odds and ends taken from old cars. These have been used to keep cottage paths and the road to the highway cleared of snow. The model cur rently In use Is In all probablllly the only privately owned, two mo tored rotary anow plow to be found In the entire State of Oregon. The rear end ls propelled by a Chevro let motor, while the front of the vehicle Is operated by a Bulck mo tor which runs the rotary and snow blower. FINE HI.EF.PIN(; The Wilson Cottages offer tourist accommodations of a high quality. The Collages aro listed under "Ore gon In Duncan Ulnes' national di rectory, "Good Places to Spend the Night Lodging for a Night," which catalogues hotels. Inns, over night guest houses and modem aulo courts (all ot which must con form to the high standards set by Duncan Hlncsi, directing the tra veler to superior accommodations In every state In the Union. The utmost In modern conveni ence and comfort may be found by visitors stopping at the Wilson Cottages, where one, two or three bedrooms are available In the de luxe, roomy and tastefully furnish ed separate cabin units. Regular vacatlonista here for alx consecutive years have been Pro fessor and Mrs. Paul Bonn as and small daughter Marianne. He is professor of ceramics at the Uni versity of Washington, Seattle. Last season Uie three missed their annual rest and elaxatlon at the Wilson Cottages because they were touring their native lands of France and Switzerland. During their stays here in the past, Prof. Bonl fas has entertained many with demonstrations of the cereamlc art at their vacation home, and the charming family has made many friends here. DON'T WATCH The Wilson's have a faith In the inherent honesty of people which Is most refreshing in this somewhat cynical day and age. Most ot the time, their grocery store ls left untended, with the front door open, while the owners are busy at vari ous tasks elsewhere. They say that the little they have lost by this practice is greatly outweighed by the work accomplished, Customers either help themselves and leave the correct change on the counter, or call one of the proprietors In from the cottages. Tentative plans are under 'consideration at this time for again opening a restaurant on the premises, as an added ac commodation to the traveling pub lic. In addition to their private per sonal building enterprises, the Wil son brothers this year undertook a big project for the Fort Klamath Community Methodist cnurcn, ana last month saw lis finish, when they completed work of building sufficient pews to fill the cburcb to capacity this required twelve ten foot pews, two live foot pews, as well as seats for the choir, pas tor and guest speaker. Wilson pro duced lumber was used through out in construction of the new church furniture, installed recently. The Wilsons also had a large part In decorating the interior of the church last year, doing . the work free of charge. This was In cluded in improvements listed cur ing the year in the Oregon Town and Country Church Improvement contest, sponsored by the Oregon Council of Churches in cooperation with the Sears Roebuck foundations Promoting the contest here was Mrs. Hansferd T. (Mike) Williams, assisted by members and board of the church and people of the community in general. The work resulted in a cash prize of $7.1.00 being awarded in the local church category. Entry In the state wide contest among churches has been made again this year. TOLD ABOUT v In 1949, when highway 97 over Sun Mountain Pass was re-routed. threatening to reduce Fort' Klam ath to a mere dot on the map, the Wilson brothers were largely re sponsible for starting an adverti sing campaign. It was carried out and financed entirely by local busi ness people and was designated to promote tourist travel to Crater Lake via Fort Klamath and ihe Wood River valley. In 1950, enthusi astic Fort Klamath business oper ators organized to form the Fort Klamath Business Association, which each succeeding year has sent out descriptive and factual Crater Lake Wood River Valley in formation to many states as well as points in Canada and elsewhere. Valuable aid in preparing the pamphlet was given by Supertn- lenoeni e. p. Leavitt (now retired) and the rangers of the Crater Lake National Park 8ervlce, who cooper ated wholeheartedly In the venture. COMMANDER PARIS I Lt. Oen.
