Power was supplied to the public principally lor lighting, on a sched ule which normally started one hour bcloro sun-up . and continued until 8 p.m., 10 p.m. or midnight, depending upon Uie operator. Ser vice was indifferent, limited and costly. The average rates Were aboul 35 cents per kilowatt hours. Shortly alter the turn ol the century, men of vision constructed larger plants, opcrsting on alter nating current, extended transmis sion lines, provided 24-hour ser vices, encouraged industry and started a continuing program of technological advancement.
