Tompkins' nomination by the Presdent must be approved by the U. 8. Senate. He said he suspects his appoint ment came as a result of the good work of his otlice here in crack ing down on gangsters and racke teers and "some successlul income tax evasion" cases. "And what a time for It to come." he said, "right In the mid dle of the Zwillmau thing." He referred to an income tax ca.se involving prohibition era rumrun ner Abner (Longle) Zwlllman of Newark, which his office now Is presenting to a federal grand Jury. Zwlllman was linked with big-time rackets during the Senate Crime Investigating Committee hearings 111 1991. Tompkins, a Republican, said he wants to clear up the Zwlllman matter before he goes to Wash ington, which he expects will be about June 1. , Leaning back In a swivel chair with his feet propped up on a desk in his impressive Federal Build ing office here, he viewed Uie as signment as "a really great chal lenge." It will involve "analysts of cases, evaluating information and making policy decisions." he said. Til give it everything I have." Tompkins, known as "Tommy" to his friends, has an engaging sort of dimple in his cheek when he laughs, which he does often. He has dark, wavy hair, receding bit at the temples, and bushy eye brows. He took a look at his drver's license to confirm that his eyes are blue. A descendant of one of the men who helped found Newark, he lives in an old farmhouse in suburban Maplewood with his wife Jane and 10-year-old son William Jr. As U. S. attorney, he says he worked 10 to 12 hours a day, many nights and weekends, but "I was so interested In the work in this office that I honestly haven't considered it work." He gives much of the credit for his success in handling important federal cases to his hand-picked staff of young men on their way up." During his term in the State Assembly, Tompkins sponsored legislation to bolster New Jersey's war on narcotics peddlers and users. He also sponsored court in tegration bills, a law to put the appointment of Jury commission ers into the hands of the Supreme Court rather than the governor and co-sponsored a bill creating a waterfront commission to look into widespread racketeering on the New Jersey docks. In addition to his legal duties as U. S. attorney, he was the guid ing force behind an "educational program" to wipe out rackets and gambling in New Jersey's network of big industrial plants. Pondering the question of how he spends his leisure time, he said he had to admit he spent all his free time with hs family. Like any other father, he gets his ex ercise romping with young BUI, he said. A carry-over from his col lege days, he still plays sandlot baseball.
