Let. Mar. PRIZE WINNERS in the annual Poppy Poster contest sponsored by the American Legion Aux iliary were presented at a meeting or the auxiliary, May 4 in the Veterans Memorial Hall. First prize essay has been entered in state competition. Judges this year were Mrs. Catherine Brumbaugh, Mrs. C. E. Johnson and Mrs. E. S. Casey. Poppy Poster Chairman was Mrs. Kathar ine Keep, right, shown presenting awards to (I to r) Ralph Warner, 2nd place, and Sarah Taylor, first prize winner, 4th-Sth-6th grades division, both of Riverside school. In the upper division including the 7th-8th and 9th grades, first prize went to Patricia Wicks, Riverside, center, and second place to Stena Anderson, Roosevelt school. Honorable mention went to Ruby Reeves, Delmar Hawley, Adele Goehring, Beverley Westlund, Cora Leitzke, Jeanne Martin, Fred Olson and Sharon Russell. Potato Types Discussed TULELAKE Most of the im portant new potato varieties de veloped by the United States De partment of Agriculture and other sources have been tried out at the Tulelake Field Station, reports B. J. Ho vie. In general, hundreds of varieties are tested before a good new spud is discovered. So far special purpose" potatoes such ns Kennebec for potato chips have been the most successful in finding a new market. KenneDec bas a very vigorous growth habit but is not a very ruga quality eating potato accord ing to some growers who pro duced It here last year. However, the potato chippers will always buy Kennebec over any other variety wnen toey can get it. The reason for this is that per hundred pounds of potatoes they get eight to ten per cent more pounds of finished chips. Some question has been raised concerning the large amount of field greening noticed by some growers. This condition is due to a growth habit of the potatoes and can be overcome by careful cultl vatlon and close attention to cul tural practices. ' Another variety grown at the field station is Houma. After years 01 testing different varieties this one shows the most promise as a possible substitute for White Rose, and this basin could become an im portant seed producing area for the central California market. Since changing varieties depend upon market acceptance of the new variety, many years may go by before Houma might become Im portant. Other varieties tested last year were; Cobbler. Katakdin. Sebaso. Sequ-Oia. Ontario and Menominee. Some of these have certain disease resistant characteristics.
