MAY 0. .054 -r- -r - Weiser, Al Moore In Semi Tomorrow night's boxing crd promises four outstanding support' lnff bouts of ring warfare, and wilt give the Armory fans one of the best main events ever staged in Klamath Falls. Big BIU Mathls and Jarrln' Jim my Byrne will meet In a scheduled ten rounder, but both fighters are going after a knockout before the fight runs the full distance. To Mathis, this fight is some thing that he has been after for quite a while, and for a good rea son, in his own estimation. Byrne and Mathls have met once before, and until Byrne landed one of his dynamited right uppercuts, the big San Francisco Negro was ahead of the Portland heavyweight on points. Mathls has hollered loud and long for a rematch with Byrne, and has claimed that Byrne's booming right was a lucky punch. Big Bill, who weighs somewhere around the 330-35 mark will have the decided weight advantage over Byrne, who is no small man in the ring, as he stands near the 6-3 mark, and weighs in for his fights about 318. Mathis was signed by promoter Mack Ullard. when Andy Walker, who was originally scheduled to meet Byrne, fell victim of a pain ful hand injury. At last reports. there was a possibility of Walker having a fractured bone in his punching hand. , The semi-wind up will finish off a top grade of preliminary bouts on the supporting card, when Al Moore, the McChord Air Force Base boxing clown, makes his sec ond appearance in the Armory ring against Ralph Weiser, of Beat ty. "The Clown" and Weiser fought the semi of the Byrne-Roger Smith fight about two months ago, and local ring fans still are talking about the show that Moore put on for the ringside and gallery fans. Weiser, who was very much puzzled by Moore's unorthodox style of fighting, in the six round er of the Byrne Smith battle, has mentioned that he would like very much to meet Moore again, and this time would know what to ex pect from the colorful clown from the Bay Area. Many who missed the exhibition of clowning and boxing In Moore's last appearance here will get an other opportunity to see him in action tomorrow night. '-" LUlard has gone all out to make this supporting card the best ever held' in this city, and in doing so he has signed two special six rounders for the fans enjoyment. ' Bobby Barney, of Sprague River, and Rudy Carlson will meet in one of these specials, that will prove a test for the Sprague River knockout king. Bamey and Carlson both ap peared on the last program. Barney posted a second round TKO over Al Cobb of Seattle, and Carl eon dropped a decision to Darrell Harrington. In the other six rounder, Har rington meets Eddie Brown, in what shapes up to be another "clamored for" match, since Brown claims he was robbed -on it decision in their last fight. Brown had Harrington on the ropes and very near out, when the bell ended, but the judges gave the fighters a draw despite Brown's last minute rush on Har rington. - - In a four rounder that will fill out the program, Billy Sunday will tangle with San Francisco's Bud dy Clearwater. Sunday is returning to the local ring after a short absence to meet the highly regarded four round fighter from California. Miller had the second high game score, and the top with scores of 934 and 2733. Bob Morrison led all the indi viduals with a 314 game, and a series total of 559 pins. Rudy Ecklund also had a high game total of 214 to share Uv limelight with Morrison in one line scoring. Clyde Ritter had second high series with a 547 pin score. In last night's action Klamath Printing took the high game scor ing honors with a 966, and AVA Farms posted the, top series score for teams with a 2706 total. Second places went to Louie's In the game column with a 965, fist one pin back of the leaders, and the Printing team rolled the sec ond high series score with a three line total of 2667. . " Don Fuller and Ell Ross topped individual bowlers with their win ning scores of 334 pins for a game, and 624 total for series, respective ly. Ross and Southwell were close behind Fuller in game scoring with their scores of 225 and 321. Fuller was second high in series with his 590. Mel Robinson, Al Hakenwcrth and Charlie Booth led the league in high individual average throughout the year with all three registering In with a 185 pin av erage. Next Wednesday the Classic League pay-off will take place at Lucky Lanes. Also on the program will be the Classic League doubles tourna ment starting at 8 o'clock. All league bowlers are asked to turn out for the last night's, action, ac cording to a league spokesman. Oregon Dumps Idaho Vandals MOSCOW, Idaho UH Oregon jumped on Idaho starter Ken Hal lett for seven hits and six runs Wednesday and held on for an 8-4 Northern Division baseball vic tory over the Vandals. Halett was relieved after 1 1-3 innings by Jerry Barton who blanked the Webfoots until the fi nal two stanzas when they con verted three hits into two more runs. Idaho managed only four safe blows off Trent Huls. Skin Diving Gains In Popularity NEW YORK lfl The fastest growing sport In the country, we are solemnly Informed. Is skin diving. At the end of World War II there were no more than 500 pi the wet fraternity, counting some ot them twice, and now there arc more than a million, with the num ber growing dally. Skin divers, as the name implies, are men and women who put nn bathing suits and goggles and swim, fins to kick with and go hell ing down Into deep water. Some of! them spear fish while they are down there, but many just like to look around and see how tne other fish live. Devotees of the new craze claim there's nothing liko it for pure pleasure. At the most recent count there were more than 400 skin-diving clubs in this country alone, all ol them affiliated with the recently formed International Underwater Spearflshing Assn.. which is quar tered at Helms Hall in Los An geles. California leads the suites with some 100.000 of the human submarines and Florida is second with about 40.000. Manufacturers of equipment for the sport looked up suddenly and found they had a bonanza. It Is es timated that 40 million dollars was spent in this country last year for breathing tubes, masks, swln fins, "lungs," photographic equipment and spear guns. There are, it seems, two distinct schools of skin diving. In the first stage the embryo addict stays fairly near the surface and con tents himself with looking at the sights. This is described as invig orating and habit forming. When the tyro gets enough of that and is firmly hooked, he straps a cylinder of compressed air or oxvgen on his back and be gins going deep, down ameag the big bull fish. He totes a spear pow ered either by a large rubber band, which has a range of about nine feet, or a more powerful weapon employing springs or carbon diox ide gas. It is not. the skin divers insist, l unequal battle. They have learned that a 10-pound fish, irri tated at being stuck by a spear. can haul a 160-pound man all over the ocean floor. Since the hunter who Is operating without breathing aids has only about a minute to get down there, shoot his fish and return to the surface, this can prove awkward. Bags of up to 50 pounds of fish are. however, not uncommon. The biggest one yet wrestled to shore In this country, at least, was a Jewfish. weighing just under 450 pounds. -..
