John Boarlcman. seeking renoml' nation In the lace of bitter charges that he betrayed his native Ala bama as Democratic vice prcsl dentist nominee In 1953. swept to an apparent victory in yesterday's party primary. A massive, perhaps unprecedent ed turnout of voters, many of them newly registered under a relaxed poll tax law, gave the 64-year-old Sparkman a steadily widening majority over three opponents. Another familiar political figure, former Gov. James E. Folsom, ran far ahead in the race for the nomination for governor despite accusations of misconduct during bis first term. The 6-foot-s Insurance man, whose antics gained him nation wide publicity and the nickname of "Kissing Jim," moved within range of a majority of all votes cast In the seven-man race. . . Unofficial returns from 1,802 of 3,715 boxes gave Sparkman 167,986 votes In tile Senate contest to 118.496 for his nearest and most critical opponent. Rep. Laurie Bat tle of Birmingham. Retired Adm. John Crommelin. whose feud with the Air Force and persistent outspoken critics from nationwide defense policies got him sidelined by the Navy in 1950. was third with 11.291, and 75-year old William C. Irby Sr., who ad vocated a vast government give away program financed with cheap money, ran last with 3.308. Folsom had 145.841 votes for a second term as governor against combined total for all six oppo nents of only 170,844.- It gave hun approximately 45 per cent of the total vote. Unless he did win a clear major-! Ity, Folsom would face a runotf June 1 with' the second-place can didate. State Sen. Jimmy Faulk ner of Bay Minette, a political newcomer who became a strong contender almost overnight with radio-television marathon. In six weeks he estimated he spent 235 hours on the air Faulkner had 90.986 votes; Lt. Oov, James B. Allen 39.139: for mer State Sen, Bruce Henderson 26,662; Jack Owen, president of the Publlo Service Commission. 11,917: former Stale Docks Direc tor Henry Sweet 2.140; and Win ston Oullatte, another Insurance man, 1,708. Gordon B. Persons, the present governor, was barred from seeking re-election bv a state law which prevents the Incumbent from suc ceeding mmseit , Sparkman, making his first race since the 1952 presidential cam paign, was accused by Battle and Crommelin of "selling out" his state on the civil rights Issue of advocating a strong racial equal ity program In the North while denouncing it in Alabama during the 1952 campaign. The senator Insisted on the other hand that he never deviated from unyielding opposition to the civil rights program. Six of Alabama's nine congress men were renominated without opposition. Two others won re nomination over lone opponents; Rep. Kenneth Roberts defeated young Tarver Rountree Jr. In the 4th District and Rep. Frank Boy kin won over John Mandeville in the First. George Huddleston Jr., son of a former congressman, led In the 9th District, where Battle gave up his seat to run against Sparkman. He apparently faces a runoff June 1 against ex-Postmaster Arthur Allbright. IWA-CIO Union Extends Contract Setter Forest Products, Green ville, California, IWA local union has extended Its contract without change to April 1, 1955, accord ing to Cbet Irving, Pine Industrial Relations Committee. - Normally approximately 70 em ployes are involved. Congress Plans Small Chapel r WASHINGTON Ufl The Senate has voted to fix up a small room at the Capitol as a chapel "for prayer and meditation" of mem bers of Congress. - The Rouse adopted the measure last summer and it now goes to the White House.
