Condemnation Row Flares In Council
By PATI O'CONNOR
Although the first hearing on the
proposed condemnation of certain
bullduigs in Kiamaui rails is not
set until April 26, City Council got
preview 01 things to come with
the visit to council of Mrs. 1. O.
Diverts, owner of part of the prop
erty in question, and Mrs. Ray
mond Tlce, one of .the petitioners
who started the ball rolling for
condemnation.
The situation got more than a
little strained as Mrs. Diverts in
sisted that she worked "pretty
steady" at her "hobby," and in.
formed council that the rocks
(which are reportedly In the rear
of the lot and Into the allevi

tinued, "they're going to stay
there"!
She Jumped Mrs. Tlce about her
charge that there was an open
sewer on her property, and Mrs.
Tice declared she had to "answer
only to City Council." (The sewer. I
according to Building In&uector
Vern schortgen, Is an open ditch
covered with some boards but Is
not connected to the city sewer
line.)
Written reports from the build
ing inspector and the fire chief
described some of the buildings in
question on wendiuig street and
Alameda Avenue as dangerous to
children and a fire hazard. Ac
cording to Schortgen's report, the
ouimings on wenaiing were moved
in October 29, 1951, and are riot
completed; the one at 225 Ala
meda was moved in January 37,
im, and is not completed.
A resolution setting the date for
the hearing on these properties
will be prepared by City Attorney
Henry Perkins, for adoption at
the next council meeting. '
In other council business, Mayor
Paul Landry tried to allay fears
of Tony Stelnbock, an operator for
seven years at the municipal air
port, .,.
Steinbeck wanted an assurance
from council that. In the event the
proposed establishment of a Jet
air base here becomes reality.
