Fish Derby Opens At Westport WESTPORT, Wash, m West port lifted the lid on Its salmon season Sunday, opening a summer long derby that will wind up Aug. 39. Every big event, of course, has to have a queen and Westport se lected Her Royal Highness at a Saturday night coronation ball. The winner In a group of 13 con testants was 15-year-old Zoe Mu maw, a comely brunette freshman at Ocosta High School. Few fish were caught on opening day although fishermen were plentiful on the open sea outside the westport Jetty. Most ot the salmon landed were small, the 'lunkers" for which Westport Is famous not yet knowing they have a derby date. Sponsored bv the Westport Chamber of Commerce, the derby will carry 19 weekly prizes of $50 each, four monthly prizes of $100 and seven dally prizes of $100 lor the final week. Twenty-five final cash prizes also will be up, the amounts depending upon the num ber of entries. Press and radio people came from many cities in the state to help get this resort village's derby started, this is tne town's first all-season fishing project, although another two-day derby has been a fixture and will be held again this summer. From the standpoint of national Interest, the main result will be to tap a Republican for an attempt to tin Democrat Paul H. Douglas out oi nis uenate seat. Mine candi dates are scuffling for the OOP senatorial nomination. Joseph T. Meek and Edward A, Hayes are regarded as the top con tenders. Between the two, obser vers are inclined to give Meek a shade the better ot it. Meek heads the Illinois Feder ation of Retail Associations. Hayes a former national comman der of the American Legion. The nation's first primary to morrow will determine, too, wheth er 10 House members, four of them chairmen of major committees, will get a chance to run again In November. Over the country, politicians are eyeing the primary for straws in the wind. But they may have to strain to detect any real trends, any significant Midwestern senti ment on national issues, or any clear signs -of approval or disap proval of what the Eisenhower ad ministration and Congress are doing. ' Various candidates have been bringing up such questions as farm and employment problems or blun dering against sending any Ameri cana to fight in Indochina.' But vo ters seem to be more Interested In local issues, and races involving city snd county offices and seals in the state legislature.
