The Senate winds up a month oC on-and-off de bate on Hawaii-Alaska statehood today with prospects that Ule vqW, indicated by nightfall, would send the measure on to the House. Tile measure lacks administra tion endorsement in its present tan dem form and faces an uncertain future In the House, which last vear passed a bill to grant state hood to Hawaii only. That Is all President. Eisenhower has asked. Sen. Smathers (D-Flal, a lead- tag opponent of statehood for both territories, conceded that .Senate passage of the bill Is "fairly cer. tain". "In the face of a tremondous and skillful campaign of pressure and propaganda, it is gratifying to believe that the vote will be fairly clone, " he said In a statement. In the House. Republican lead- ers reportedly are set against Alaska statehood now and deter mined to prevent it from, coming to a vote either alone or com bined with Hawaii. Sen. Anderson (D-NM), primary sponsor of the successful move in the Senate to tie Hawaii and Ala.v ka together in the Senate, said Senate passage of the combined bill would put the Issue squarely up to Eisenhower. He said presidential endorse. ment of Alaska statehood could change the situation in the House overnight and clear the way for two new stars in the American flag. The one girl Horn this area and Fort Klam ath selling the most mints over 75 boxes, will earn a week s camping trip this summer. The groups have been active this year. Mrs. Allen. Cline and Mrs. Lloyd Peters are leader and as sistant leader for the seven and eight year olds. The girls have made spoon holders, pictures, clay animals, and doll cradles recently. The eight and nine year olds, nave Mrs, Joe Adamo and Mrs Earl Hall as leader and assistant, These girls have gone on hikes, baked cookies, made candy, yarn dons and pot holders. The Camp Fire Girls have Mrs. Dwight Klrcner as guardian. Mrs, Victor Sisson as assistant. Girls working for rank, have given parties, made cotton hospital .bags mica with, tiny toys ana dooks, are planning to sell Easter lilies for the crippled children, and for April 10 are scheduling a foreign dish luncheon at the home of their lead er. , Two local Horizon Clubs are ac tive. The young girls are led by Mrs. Eugene ' Marchington. who needs an assistant leader. The girls have had snow parties, gone to style show,-worked in crafts, held a successful baked food sale and are planning a spring "campouf at Diamond Lake. Recently they were entertained by former Camp Fire guardian, Mrs. James Rodgers of Sprague River and her mother, committee of awards chairman, Mrs. Roy Glen. ger, at a slumber party at the Glenger home. The girls came dressed as a song title, played games and had very little sleep The older Horizon Club combines Fort Klamath and Chiloquin girls with Fort Klamath leaders. Mrs. Frank Strahan and Mrs. W. B, Hes cock. A skating party was their latest recreation. They are consid ering a summer trip. All the leaders, many of the spon sors, and a few others, belong to a leaders' club, which meets every few months. Mrs. Dwight Ktrchcr was hostess for the last meeting. District leader, Mrs. Naomi French I of Klamath Falls, was special guest. Mrs, Hcscock. president, of Helmed for the business session. Mrs. Earl Hall was acting secre tary, as Mrs. George Brautlacht was away. The group voted to ds continue charging dues, to purchase copies of "Frontiers," "Fun With 1 Science." to plan a ceremonial, and to select a new committee of awards. Mrs. Roy Olongor will be chairman of the committee. Others will be announced later.
