There-ls-even reason to believe that a lew snots of the vaccine can give lifetime :. protection. -V ; At the moment, the vaccine is like a new type of airplane; The engineers are pretty surer, it will "fly and perform as expected. But the acid test is to fly it-.- ; So an army of half a million to million little children will step . forward soon to take trial shots. After summer's end it can be ' learned whether the vaccine really defends them against polio and . fiRralvais. ' ' 1 a. If It passes this critical test, then all the .nation's 46 million children could istart getting it next year. In a few years, no one would need be vulnerable to polio . u. All this is Just a promise. But . It is based upon all the scientific facts known now about polio.. .This - vaccine could fall. If it does, there 5 are prospects for still other vac ' clnes. perhaps better ones. ' The vaccine story is simple, In retrospect just as . the solution of -;a detective mystery is simple, in - retrospect. Dr. 6alk's vaccine Is made of dead yirus, using all three types of ' virus which can cause human oaralvsls. ." It is safe, because dead virus ' cannot cause polio. But the dead virus can still creat defenses airainst live, dangerous virus. . The key question is: Is the de- fense 'obtained this way really aoori enouah? -'The answer can only be found by giving the vaccine to hundreds of tnousanas or ennaren, peiorc the polio season begins. Local health authorities and the National . Foundation for Infantile Paralysis are conducting these field trials. . This summer many of these : Vaccinated children, along with luivacoinated youngsters, will be Invaded by polio virus in natural exposure or iniecuon. f Do most or all the vaccinated ' children escape paralysis, as com' ; Dared with the nonvacclnated? Tf ,.. 4nn' wn ha. come ill and sometimes die. - Once vou have made antibodies, you usually keep them, you have your antibody factories all set up, ready to go to work at a moment's notice. The antobodies against one J kind of germ or virus work only i against that specific disease agent - It is now known that most of -. its bv age 15 already have ami. .1 ' bodies against one, two, or all j three separate types of virus which : can cause paralytic polio. We v.: made them sometime in the past ' when virus invaded us. Most of us , '"never knew we had the virus. Once ' you make antibodies . against a virus, you apparently ara protect ed lor me against tnat type of . virus. The purpose of a vaccine Is to ' make you set up antibody factories i . by giving you dead or sale virus, Dr. Salk has been testing his vaccine on children for a year and a half. Of nearly 6.000 children vacci nated so far, not one has become ill with any fever from the vac cine, or even had soreness in the arm receiving uie snots. Blood tests show the vaccina. tlons can create antibodies against all three types of virus, even in children who had no polio ant. Bodies at all before getting the vaccine. They kept these antibodies, in what seem to be protective u m o u n t s, for at least sevenJ months, mat s the length of one polio season. But Dr. Salk has lust .made heartening new find. It seems that the first one or two shots' of vaccine alter the body's antibody mechanism, make it more sensitive. When the third or booster shot of vaccine is given sometime later, antibody produc tion soars sky-high. Some children even got more antibodes than they snow aiier natural iniecuon . with polio. And Dr. Salk has a little evi dence that natural exposure to polio alter one or two . shots ol vaccine may act like a booster shot of vaccine. The sensitized antibody mechanism may be triggered into auick. nun Droduc tion of antibodies against the virus wmcn is making an invasion. These are reasons for thlnkimr urn a tew snots ot vaccine can give life-long protection. Whenever live virus came along, the antl. body policemen would aonear in ueavy iorce. Children in the test are getting two shots of vaccine spaced a week apart, with the booster shot lour weeks later. Actually there may be a better timing or spacing for the booster shot to create the most protection, and this question is being studied. It's also possible that only one Initial or sensitizing shot is needed, lollowed by one booster later. Well, you may ask, if the vac cine creates antibodies, why is there any doubt that it won't pro tect the children? There are two questions. One is whether there are enough antl. bodies from the vaccine. The other Is whether the virus can attack nerves witout going through the tloodstraam where the antibodies are standing guard. The evidence Is that most of us get polio because the virus enters the intestinal tract, then gets Into the bloodstream, and then moves on to attack the nerves. But there is evidence that some times It can bypass the blood stream, thus escaping attack by the antibodies. The tests on thousands of chil dren will help show how often the virus may attack In this manner rather than through the blood stream. ,-Bui.tilerf u 1 hoPeful fact here too.
