Gunmen Aid
Prison Break
ROCHESTER, Tf. Y. Wl Two
gunmen bluffed their way into the
Monroe County Penitentiary early
today and engineered the escape
of two prisoners. The four made
their getaway in a guard's car.
The escaped prisoners were iden
tified by prison officials as James
Compton, 30, of Du Bois, Fa., and
Cohocton, Ohio, and Anthony
Mendolla, 45, of Rochester.
Compton was serving a one-year
term nn a bad check charge and
Mendolla a similar term for petit
larceny.
Police, who listed the four as
"dangerous," threw up road blocks
over a wide area of western Mew
York and said they might be head
ing for Canada.
The gunmen entered the peni
tentiary about 12:30 a.m. after tell
ing Clyde Jefferds, 63, chief night
guard, that they had cigarettes
end a newspaper for Compton.
They gagged Jefferds and tied his
hands, then walked him down a
corridor and into the turnkey's of
fice. One of the- men ' took the jail
keys, opened a cell block door and
confronted James Marshall, an
other guard. Marshall quoted the
gunman as saying, "Okay, I'll take
over now."
Marshall was forced to release
Compton and Mendolla from their
cells and then was taken to the
turnkey's office, where he also was
bound and gagged.
The four fled In Jefferd's auto
before the two guards could free
themselves and sound the alarm.

Chief James Lizes says he Is get
ting complaints that the Rev. Kirk
Wetzel, an evangelist, Is disturbing
the peace by flying over town and
broadcasting sermons and vnymns
every afternoon from his plane.
The chief doesn't know whether
he has the right to charge the
minister with disturbing the peace.
"Maybe I'll ask him to cooperate,"
Jie says.
Wetzel, who has been a licensed
pilot since 1931, said:
"I'll try to be reasonable but I
can't stop my work. I really ques
tion If I disturb anyone at that
hour anyhow."

Rice, 124 N. Laguna, is home
on leave from Ft. Ord, where
he recently completed an
eight weeks course in supply
school, graduating as an
honor student. Rice is now
attached to Co. I of the 63rd
Infantry Regiment.
Man Faces Old
Prison Charge

fic tickets led to the discovery
that Moses Bryant, 47, escaped
from the Alabama state road camp
21 years ago.
Bryant, married and the father
of two, was taken into custody
on four warrants charging eight
traffic violations. Police learned,
through a check of fingerprints,
that Bryant, also known as Willie
B. Brown, was wanted in Alabama.
He said he was sentenced to 24
to 30 months for a burglary he
did not commit and 'that he fled
the camp in 1932. Alabama auth
orities inquired by telegram yes
terday whether he will waive ex
trudltlon. "I'm going to fight it," he said.
"I don't want to go back."

After two months of wedded life,
Rublrosa said, they both realized
that his fourth marriage and his
wile's fifth was on the rocks.

ends surrounding the much-publicized
marriage:

signed papers before and after the

LADTJNA BEACH, Calif. W
There was a life and death battle
in the surf off Allso Beach, near
here, yesterday, between two 30
foot whales and a 15-foot shark, but
the outcome finally was shrouded
by the deep water of the Pacific.
Two lifeguards who watched the
marine giants flail the surf for
several minutes said the whales
chased the shark onto the sand and
there was a deadly exchange that
left a section of the strand blood
red. Then the battlers plunged into
deep water again and disappeared.
