OREGON PACT KINX House Committee Votes To Continue Corporation Tax MARGARET CUDDY Concert Dancing Star To Appear Margaret Cuddy, lovely danc ing star of, "Musical Americana," comes to the company from tours with Martha Graham, Valerie Bet tis and Helen Tamiris and other first ladies of the dance. Most re cently she was a principal dancer In. "Wonderful Town." The ash blonde Miss Cuddy was born in Scwlckley, Pa., and trained In the Neighborhood Playhouse School in New York and the Amer lean Theater wing. Miss Cuddy has danced in a number of television productions and was a member of the regular cast of the Ken Mur ray show. She will be seen tonight with "Musical Americana" at the Pelican Theater. The doors will be open at 7, cur tain time at 8. Admission' Is by membership card only.. National Anthem Greets Citizen DALLAS, Tex. MV-Lev Aronson, first cellist of the Dallas Sym phony Orchestra was late for re hearsal the other day. When he ' showed up conductor Walter Hendl gave him a dirty glare and then ignored him. "Let's go back to No. 5," said Hendl to the orchestra, which in stantly burst Into "The Star-Spangled Banner." Aronson had just left federal court and had become a naturalized citizen. John Roscnflcld, music and drama critic of the Dallas News, who sponsored Aronson, says the former Buchenwald concentration c-amp Inmate is so thorough a citi zen that the other orchestra mem bers now eall him Tex. WASHINGTON (i The House ways and Means Committee voted 22-2 Tuesday to continue the pres ent corporation Income tax for one more year, and wipe out a two billion dollar reduction scheduled automatically under present law for April 1. Only two Democrats Reps. Mills of Arkansas and Gregory of Kentucky voted against the move, strongly urged by President Eisenhower. The committer decided to put the corporate rate into a general 800 - page bill overhauling almost all of the nation's tax laws. At the same time it decided to take up Wednesday the question of excise tax rates. under present law, a number of cuts are scheduled April 1 In the excise rates, sometimes called sales taxes. The top corporation income tax rate, now 52 per cent,, is scheduled to drop automatically to 47 per cent April 1. President Elsenhow er has urged a one-year extension of the present rate to help, reduce me leaerat oencit. At one time the President's pro posal had stirred strong opposition. including promises ol a fight by Rep. Daniel A. Reed (R-NY), Ways and Means chairman. Also, there was widespread talk of a compromise at a 50 per cent cor poration income tax rate. Committee members said much of the corporation has melted, how- ever, because of other tax cuts In effect or planned this year, notably business benefits provided in the general tax revision measure. If approved by the House and Senate, it would reduce revenues trom in dividuals and business by about $1,300,000,000 the first year and more later, chiefly through more liberal deductions. Previously, . Republican commit tee members had ruled out any effort to deal with major tax rates in the revision bill. The evident decision to shift tactics came at a private caucus late yesterday, after a series of meetings involving Republican congressional leaders, Nesideot Elsenhower and Secre tary of the Treasury Humphrey. GOP members said the new plan would:- 1. Help counter a Democratic ar gument that the revision bill is heavily loaded in favor of business benefits. 2. Clear the air for separate handling of . another bill dealing only with excise tax rates. Orig inally it had been planned to put khe corporate and excise rates into a single package. Reed was said to be planning to introduce soon a bill backed by GOP House leaders which would cut all excise rates above 10 per cent down to that level, except for liquor and tobacco. This would bring substantial re ductions in taxes on movie and other admissions, telephone and telegraph bills, passenger fares, jewelry, women's handbags, furs, cosmetics, luggage, sporting goods and other items. Flans call for It to provide also for cancellation o f reductions scheduled April 1 on other goods liquor, automobiles, gasoline, to bacco, beer and wine. In all this maneuvering. Repub licans are hoping to build up strength to try to defeat a Demo cratic move to write into the re vision bill an increase 'from $600 to $700 in individual income tax exemptions. This would cut in come taxes by 2'i billion dollars a year. Tho exemption increase Is strong ly opposed by the administration. Ike Security Guards Increased WASHINGTON tl Increased security precautions to protect President Eisenhower were evi dent at the White House Tuesday as a result of the capitol hill shooting affray. On the main Pennsylvania gate leading to the President's office, for example, four uniformed White House policemen and a secret Service agent were stationed. Ordinarily there are only two uniformed men at the post and they usually remain in a small office just Inside the gate. Tues day mere, were two men outside the gate and two inside.
