Y'i Soldiers Hurt In Mass Jump COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.Hl Eighteen parachutists were in jured, eight of them seriously, Tuesday as the Army staged its highest mass jump in history, offi cials in charge of the event report ed. . . Two of those hurt suffered pos sible broken backs, the Army said, and legs. The men were not immediately Identified. They we.re taken to the hospital at Camp Carson, scene of the jump. Injuries sufiered by 10 of the men were described as minor. A total of 430 men jumped from nine Globemaster planes into be low freezing weather, in the first of two demonstrations. The parachutes almost blotted out the rising sun at the camp, south of Colorado Springs, in the Initial leap. The jumpers were members of the 511th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, which has been training, in Colorado in recent weeks. Winslow, 25-year'-old Portland Ne gro, said Monday the State Unem ployment Compensation Commis sion had discriminated against him because of.his race. He said he had filed a complaint with Mark A. Smith, deputy state labor commissioner In Portland, accusing the agency of depriving him of rights guaranteed under the state fair employment practices law. Winslow said he based the com plaint on an investigation made by a reporter lor the Oregon Journal. The newspaper quoted Gordon Shattuck, personnel officer for the commission, aa saying that Win slow was not Interviewed for a field examiner job partly because his race would be a disadvantage in dealing with the public. rne loo has not yet been lined Silas Gleser, administrator for the commission, said , Winslow 's name still was on the list of appli cants for the job, and denied there had been any discriminatory pro- ceaure. Salmon Price Pact Signed SEATTLE Wt A Federal Trade Commission spokesman said Mon day that 31 packing companies. eight fishermen's unions and Alaska Salmon Industry, Inc., have signed an agreement prohib iting practices tending tofix the price of raw salmon in the Alaska salmon Industry. The announcement was mads bv Walter W. Harris, chief of the FTC's Seattle office, who said the last signature was obtained early Monday, the last day for concur rence by all parties. The companies, unions and Alaska Salmon Industry. Inc.. were charged -by. the FTC with a conspiracy to fix raw salmon prices. The FTC said the con spiracy existed in the mariner in which canners and fishermen de termined the i seasonal wages of fishermen, which were based on the price to be paid for raw fish, The FTC last month agreed to let. the parties, involved work out ah agreement which would lead to withdrawal of the FTC charges. The agreement, Harris said, was mailed to FTC trial examiner Ev erett Haycraft, who will check it and submit it in turn to the com mission. If the commission approves, the canners, unions and Alaska Salm on Industry, Inc., will be ordered to file a statement with the FTC within 60 days outlining the man ner in which they will operate to comply witn me cease ana aesist agreement. ;j , Jury Convicts Eastern Reds DETROIT (fl Six Michigan Communists were convictett Ities day of conspiring to teach and ad vocate violent overuirow of uie United States government. ' A Federal Court Jury of seven women and five men retnmpn it verdict to Judge Frank A. Plcard alter seven hours deliberation. The five men and one woman defendant, all admitted Commun ists, could be -sentenced to five years imprisonment, Federal Judge Frank A.. Picard Immediately cancelled the bonds of the five men, sending them to Jail to await sentencing Friday. The $9,000 bond of Mrs. Helen Allison Winter was continued. She had been ill throughout the four-months trial but attended all sessions, some in a wheel chair. Mrs. Winter is the wife of Carl Winter, one of 11 top-flight Com munists convicted in the first con spiracy trial under the Smith act in 1949. He is now serving a 6-vear term imposed by Judge Harold R. Medina. Detroit's was the eighth such trial under the anti-conspiracy act: its verdict one of the fastest .reached in any of them. Convicted with Mrs. Winter were: Saul Wellman, chairman of the Michigan Communist . Party and currently serving a 60 - day con tempt of court sentence Imposed during the trial: . William Allan, editor of the Michigan edition of The Dnily Worker: Thomas D.
