Also many rather historical characters have shared in building this asso ciation and keeping it flourishing since 1844 when George Williams founded the idea in London and started with 11 members. Now In 1954, with the organization boast- inir 3,000,000 members, Klamath Falls with its 700 members has such a busy base of operation that Y Secretary Paul Campbell and his assistants Bob Johnson and Tom Ulmer along with 57 talented volunteer leaders are kept mighty well occupied day and night main taining control of the many pro grams. Williams, the world founder of the YMCA movement w a s a drapery clerk in London, England and met witn xi other drapery clerks in a coffeeshop to attempt doing something about the irrellgion ram pant in London in 1844, Fifty years later he was knighted by Queen Victoria for his selfless Christian service. Probably one of the most pic turesque characters to be involved in the YMCA picture was Captain Thomas V. Sullivan; retired sea captain turned missionary who in troduced the idea to Americans and founded ' the first U.S. asso ciation in Boston in 1851, Two ship wrecks were among his minor mis adventures. He was adrift without shelter for more than a week on an island of ice while the crew of his sealing ship fought to crash through ice-clogged Antarctic seas to reach him. On another occasion when about to be boarded by a pirate near the mouth of the Orinoco river he picked up his Bible, his only ammunition, and told his helmsman to point for the buccaneer and prepare to board. The brigand, somewhat aghast at this unorthodox, procedure, turned tall and hauled sail for more con ventional victims. Sullivan also do nated the first YMCA library which consisted ot live Hooks, all written lit Polynesian. , . First evidence of the truly nation al charact r ot the YMCA was in dicated during the financial panic of 1851 The "Y" held daily prayer meetings in the business section of New York City. These meetings became to popular during; the nan- io that it was necessary to post a sign reading: "Prayer and ex hortations not to exceed five min utes. In order to give all an op portunity, not more tnan two con. secullve prayers or exhortations, were given. No controversial points were discussed." Robert Ross McBurney was re sponsible for adding the word "physical" to the association's pur pose. Then in 1889 the New York City YMCA opened it's new perm anent home which had amongst its facilities a gymnasium, the first of hundreds to follow. The building, largely of McBurney's design, was copied throughout the world by other associations. These are just a few of the side lights on the characters Involved In the progress of the YMCA. Today the YMCA in North Amer ica is a tremendous organization with properties valued at more than 250,000,000 (Klamath Falls YMCA about one quarter million dollars) and building projects under way in more than 100 localities. More than 30,000,000 attendances are marked up at the 600 "Y" pools ana gymnasiums, it dispenses 32, 000,000 meals a year and the hob by clubs, religious classes and re lated activities account for 73,000, 000 attendances. Seventeen YMCA colleges are attended by 85,000 men ana women. let, the nearly 300.000 lay leaders who staff the movement's boards and committees remain motivated by the same spirit that moved their predecessors of the 1850's. Dinner will immediately be fol lowed by the business meeting, President Keith Moon said, when all activity plans and budget for the coming year will be discussed. "It's one of those cases to come and speak up or forever hold your peace," Moon said. In urging that all Klamath merchants attend.
