Weaver Pastor DON'S DG 6th and Main FT: KLAMATH METHODIST: TYPICAL RURAL CHURCH' Fort Klamath Community Meth odist cnurcn is located on a .county road some 200 feet east of the main street of Fort Klamath Crater Lake Highway 62. A directive sign erected last year on the highway by local Boy Scouts under the su- rer vision of their scoutmaster, Frank Strahan, points the way and beckons to travelers and visitors, No imposing edifice of brick or stone with stained glass windows: Instead the local church is a mod est white frame building. It is sur mounted with a bell tower from which the metal weather vane spire was knocked several year? ago by a low flying plane and has never been replaced. It has Goth ic type windows, and is a typical rural community church, the only one In the 160,000 acre Wood River Valley, and serves the entire area The church was built In 1912 by donations of labor and money for building materials by residents of the valley. The large 100 foot lot on which It. stands is also a gilt; it was deeded the church by W. T. Shlve, an -early day business man of Fort Klamath. The large church bejl was given by Senator Weerj "for whom the town of Weed. Calif., is named, who formerly owned the 27,000 acre Weed ranch. Located in the south end of the valley, it now belongs to the Hawkins Cuttle Co. of Holl list'.r. Calif. T.?sf rrnch Is not so extensive as in the days of Senator Weed. Part of the acreage has been since sold, but it Is still the larg est ranch In Wood River Valley. In the still calm of a Sabbath morning, the tolling bell is audible for a mile or more, and was given so that it might call those In the entire district to worship in a church that serves nil people, re regardless of denomination. The Rev. Worrell, originally from Ireland, was the first pastor here. First trustees named on the deed were C. E. Ed) Hoyt, still a Fort Klamath resident; Edson Watson, of whom little seems to be remembered except that he was a. retired minister living here at the time the church was built; Mrs. W. E. Nicholson, now Mrs. Arthur Short of Medford, who Is a fre quent visitor here at the home of relatives and is still keenly Inter ested In both church and Civic Im provement Club activities here, and is an honorary member of the lat ter organization. Evening church services were conducted by the light of gas lan terns until 1927, when the Califor nia Oregon Power Co. put Its first power line through oFrt KJlamath. Ellery Echlin organized a, church youth group and met with it weekly for an evening of worsnip and recre ation. Incidental to tins discussion will be the subjects of separation of church and state, and the power groups promoting dis cord among loyal Americans. A Woman's Society of Christian Service was organized in the spring of 1951, holding monthly meetings and sponsoring dinners, silver teas, etc., to raise funds to help finance various church projects. The cur- Klamath Methodist Community rent aim of the group is to install new pews in the local church, and a substantial sum has been raised to this end. The annual Chrir.tmas commu nity program is held in the church, and is a combined community school, Sunday School and Civic Improvement Club undertaking. Originally called the Church Im provement Club when organized in 1924, the group later changed the name to the present one, Civio Im provement Club. The club has al ways cooperated with the church, , and both work hand in hand for community betterment. Electricity cost is borne by the club, which also pays premium on one fire in surance policy on the church build ing. A typical helping-hand incident happened during tenure of the Rev. Bradshaw some 22 years ago. The church interior was in a bad state of disrepair, especially the cell ing, and while pulling on the bell rope one Sunday to call worshipers to cnurcn, large pieces or plaster fell down on the pastor's unpro tected head.
