The 56-year-old Republican lieu tenant governor who will succeed Earl Warren as governor of Cali fornia Is a friendly, talkative man: an experienced handshaker and a story teller of some merit. Politically, he has always jieen in a position where he hasn't bad to declare himself on Issues. It's safe to say, though, that he Is in clined to be more conservative than Warren and to avert contro versy wherever possible, j , Knight's blonde hair has turned mostly to grey. His once slender figure has filled out with the years. But he's as vigorous as they come. He'll be 67 on Dec. 9. - His somewhat rugged features and broad shoulders make you think of a football fullback when you meet Knight. Fact is, he did play two years of football on the second team at Stanford Univer sity. Not surprisingly, he won the Stanford gold medal for public speaking. A widower with two grown daugh ters, he has been a mine operator and a successful lawyer. His wife, whom he married in 1925, died of a heart ailment in Los Angeles last year. Their daughters are Mrs. Robert Eaton, 26, and Carolyn Knight, 20. The new governor apprenticed for the big Job of running the state first as a judge of the Los Angeles 1933 and 1946, he heard 7,000 cases. This was followed by seven years as leiutenant governor under Warren. He has held no other pub lic office. . . He moved up as President El senhower picked Earl Warren, a man whose political philosophy seems to follow the middle-of-the-road course advocated by Eisen hower himself, as chief Justice. Warren, 62, Is and always has been a Republican. Yet he won election as governor of California three' times with strong backing from registered Democrats who pedominate in his state. And Mr fact, cautioned his party against following "extremists of the right," declaring in a speech: "I am convinced the American people are not Socialists and will not tolerate Socialist government, but they are definitely committed to social progress." Warren was born In Los An neles. the son of a railway car repairman who came to this coun try from Norway as a child. The future governor's mother died when he was 40. His father was beaten to death as he sat alone in his living room In 1938. The slay ing never has been solved. ' Warren went into private law practice upon graduation from the University of California. In World War I he served as an infantry lieutenant and afterward became a deputy district attorney of Ala meda County mainly, he says to gain trial experience. Navajos Pleased!
