W Usually the first question put to Roland LaStarza in his training ' camp here among the green hills is how he intends to fight Rocky Marciano, the thunder-fisted cham plotv In their title bout Sept. 24 at the Polo Grounds, Specifically, the 26-year-old chal- lenger, who Is not noted as a hit ter, is asked if he plans to employ any different tactics from those he used when he lost a split decision to Rocky 3Vi years ago, when both were Just coming up. Does he intend to play , It cozy and try to win, by a, decision, or to turn tiger and go for a knockout? "All I can say is that I'll make my fight as I go along, as I al ways have," says the collegiate looking young man from the Bronx. "I know I've been criticized for it, but that's the only way I know how to fight. I always take it fairly easy in the early stages until I see what I want to do, and then I come on. That's how I've won all my tights. I've found there's no use trying to plan ex- ectly. "For example, I planned to wait for Rex Layne to come In-and then counterpunch his head off. I knew he was never in good shape, too. So what happens? He s in the best shape of his life and all he wants to do Is counterpunch, him self. I won but it was a very un satisfactory fight- as far as I was concerned. "I'll have no set plan against Rocky, except possibly to pace my self so I'll be certain of finishing strong. This will be my first 15 rounds, but that means nothing if a fighter is in shape. You might keep in mind that 111 be the first young man Rocky has fought in some time. He's been .fighting old men. Maybe he'll need to pace himself too." LaStarza was asked if he could see any specific Improvement In Marciano during the long period the pair were kept apart by Rocky's cautious manager, Al Weill, i "Oh, he's a belter fighter," Ro land conceded. "He has learned a . lot of little things, just as I have. But he's still no hell of a boxer., He didn't beat me' before and he won't this time." While Tommy finished a length behind the winner, the Judges awarded second place to Nephew Bill after ruling he was fouled by Tommy. Sun Deck returned $1860, 8.20 and 3.70 to his backers. Witte was chosen the outstanding defensive lineman in the 1952 shrine All-Star game. His team mate, B1U Toole who is also attending Ore gon State, was voted the game's most outstanding offensive oacic fieldman. .
