Csnby, famous1 figure of the Modoc War, never befoe published, are Included In the excellent history of the war years written by the late Hugh Wilson Jr. as a thesis at West Point and now on the market In the form of an attractive book. The letters were written by Canby to his wife and were se cured by the young writer from the U.S. Military Academy Library West Point during his first year. " Hugh later lost his life In a plane crash. Publication of the book which cortatns also numerous pictures, a map of the war area In the Lava Beds and other interesting data, is designed to raise a schol arship fund to send worthy grad uating senior boys to colleges or universities who otherwise could sot attend. Mrs; G. R. Alkins, chairman of the scholarship committee, who suggested the booklet to the. high school- PTA in presenting the first column today to Dan Crawford- Sr. president of the Rotary Club during the luncheon hour, said: "First we wish to honor one . of Tulelake's finest young men by .establishing a living memorial to ' him. Secondly, through funds raised by this project; we hope to provide opportunity . for worthy boys from our high school to start at Institutions ' of higher learning whose education might otherwise be limited to graduation from high school, and lastly, the com m'ttee feels that this book will fill a need in our community by presenting the story of the Modoc War of 1873 In a brief and concise iorm which can be quickly Tesd." . The book with sturdy blue cover silver lettering and on excel lent white paper stock was printed by the Guide Printing Co., Klam ath Falls. The engraving was do nated by the Herald and News, the foreward was written by the Rev. Hugh Branson, Brookings, formerly of Tulelake. Jerry Phillips, Tulelake high school freshmen drew the map. () Before, Marine Pfc. Dick Shumway went to Korea, his dog Duke, a wmvo pointer, used to lumii through a window of his master's car and stretch out in the back seat. Then Dick sold the car to a garage. Bill Shumway no relation bought -it and took it to his South Amherst home. Recently when he came to get the car he found a dog slrstcnea out in the back seat. He seemed good-tempered. But he would not get out of the car. Shumway appealed to a friend, "That's bukel" said the chief, "We just got a missing report on him." Landstrom, Portland, Ore., as chief of the research and program analysis branch of the Bureau of Land Management.
