noma County assessor's office and
declared his pet coyote for tax
purposes. .
Startled clerks finally put a 35
valuation on the animal and told
him the tax and penalty for not
declaring It before would be S2-S0.
Then they asked why he wanted
to pay a tax on nis coyote.
Loeffler retorted his landlady
complained about a coyote as a
pet and he wanted a value put on
the animal so he could sue if any
thing: liaDDencd to it.

death yesterday.
The S-ton elephant, ailing since
January with an infection of the
forelegs and feet, was found to be
suffering from cancer of the lungs.
Honey had been unable to stand
for two days before Zoo Director
George P. Vierheller ordered her
put to death with a heavy dose of
narcotics.
Elephant shows at the zoo had to
be -called off twice because the
four other elepHantg wouldn't leave
Honey when she couldn't get up.
Plants Must Have
Been Mirages
TULSA, Okla. IB For nine years
Bob Hansen watched two clusters
of strange plants grow in his yard.
Yesterday he was told by a
botanist they were sotols, a rare
desert species. "They can't grow
in Oklahoma climate," he was
advised.
The plants are 10 feet tall and
still growing.

nounced that attendance would ap
proximate 60,000 scouts and lead
ers. But estimates, have now been

Tonight the scouts will mass In
a great outdoor amphitheater over
looking the ocean for the opening
show and to hear a transcription
of a welcoming address by Presi
dent Eisenhower, who Is honoiar)
president of the Boy Scouts of
America, . He was Invited to the
Jamboree but found he was unable
to leave Washington for an appear
ance here. Vice President Richard
Nixon has accepted an invitation
to speak at the Jamboree convoca
tion Sunday evening. . .
The show tonight, with 7,000
scouts taking part on the huge
stage, will depict In pageant and
song some of - the outstanding
scenes In American history. Lanny
roes will sing the "Star Spangled
Banner" and other songs.
Another big event- will be the
"Hollywood Salute to Scouting" In
the big arena Tuesday evening.
Bob Hope and Art Linkletter are
scheduled to be masters of cere
monies and others to appear In
clude Danny Kaye, George Mur
phy, Jane Powell, Debbie Rey
nolds, Johnny Mack Brown, Pres.
ton Foster and Jimmy Wakelv.
While the broad program unfolds

thing as an Oscar curse? I asked
Miss McCambridge. who made a
sensational, award-winning debut
in films as the backstage politico
in "All the King's Men" and has
done little in the movies since.
''Of course there's no Oscar j
curse,", she replied flatly. "Win-j
ning an Oscar is certainly no draw
back; It Is bound to do a person I
some good. I am very grateful to!
the award. Before . I won It,' my
salary was $750 a week. Now it Is-'
considerably more than that.
"It is true that those actors who
were named In the item have not
done much In pictures lately. But
don't foreet this; all of them, my
self included, are pretty difficult
to cast. Tne exception is Jimmy
Dunn, who Is a great personality,
although the producers don't seem
to realize it.
"I'm sure the Oscar' has done
plenty of good for someone like
Gary Cooper. It would also be
great for the career of a Marilyn
Monroe."
Miss McCambridge subscribed to
the theory that there . are actors
and personalities in the movies.
The actors often win Academy
warns; the personalities win the
box office honors. And it's the per
sonalities who are most In demand
by the producers. .
Part of Miss McCambrldge's ab
sence from the screen has been
a matter of circumstance. She did
a few pictures after her Oscar.
