H. A single herd of 136 head of regis tered Guernsey cattle recently sold for over half a million dollars, ac cording to The American Guern sey Cattle Club. The record-breaking sale, which grossed $503,650, was the Fair lawn Dispersal Sale at Port Ches ter, New York. Some 1,000 persons, representing over 20 states, saw the Guernsey herd of S. L. Katz sold for an average price per head of over $3,100. A. M. Sonnabend of MIlUs, Mas sachusetts was top buyer, as he personally purchased 57 head for $331,000. Mr. Sonnabend bought the top- priced cow In the sale for $20,000. She was Pine Manor Courtesy, a 10-year-old cow which has twice classified Excellent, "courtesy." well-known brood matron, is the daughter of Pine Manor Crown Jewel, another famous dam. and has a son, Garaenvllle Rose King, which recently sold for $50,000. The top bull, also purchased by Sonnabend for $16,000. wus Fair lawn H. Eastern King, a proved sire who has 14 tested daughters producing over 700 pounds of fat. In addition, "King" has sired eight proven sons. His sire was Green Meadow Hornet, who has 61 tested daughters and 33 proven sons. The star and studio reached an "amicable" ending of her contract, which would have expired in Sep tember, 1954. During her 13-year reign as queen of the lot, she had earned millions for herself and the company in glossy musicals. She became the No. 1 box-office draw in wartime and has .remained among the top 10 longer than any otoer female star. At 36, her glamor gams are still holding their own with the newer names. Then why would 20th Cen tury-Pox grant her wish lor free, dom? One of the principal reasons Is that the film studios can no longer support tne expensive star lists oi the past. With picture making divorced from theater operation by government order, the studios have to show a profit or else. That meant cutting down the overhead costs that the theaters could once absorb. . Miss ' Crable was earning an estimated $5,000 a week plus big bonuses at the end of each picture. Studios now figure they can avoid such year-around expenses and merely hire talent by the picture. The 3-D revolution has caused fewer pictures to be made, re quiring fewer actors. Tills points to the decline of the star system. The studios are letting many of their established stars go ana buuaing few new ones. Miss Grable's relations with her studio began to worsen two years ago. one sat out a years' suspension after turning down "The Girl Next Door."- she declared she was "physically and mentally exhaust ed alter 18 months of steady work." Alter returning for a film, she was again suspended for refusing -pickup on South Street." She explained: "It was a starkly real istic picture done in black and white. I think it would have been dangerous for me to do." ; She gained her third suspension for refusing a Columbia loanout. Her reason: The studio couldn't assure her who the co-star would be.
