OREGON PAGE THIRTEEN KaiserC-119 Contract Off THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 1953 WASHINGTON UV The Air Force Wednesday cancelled all Us contracts with the Kaiser company for the production of transport air craft. The Air Force said the termin ation of the contracts involved C 119's the "flyinR boxcar" and C 123's at the Willow Run, Mich., plant operated by the Kaiser in terests. The firm will be permitted to complete planes now in final as sembly stages. The Air Force said the cancellation action was taken "completely Independently of the present Senate hearings now in progress." 1 . ; . At these hearings, by a Senate armed services subcommittee, Chairman Bridges (R-NH) has pro tested that the Air Force has been paying Kaiser more than five times as much for a C-119 as the same plane oosts at the Hagers town, Md., plant of the Fatrchild Aircraft Co. Fairchild developed the flying boxcar and the Air Force made Kaiser a secondary produc er. Henry Kaiser has testified that the costs of the two plants are not comparable because Willow Run Is a huge plant being operated at low capacity, and Fairchild at Hagerstown is a small plant in full operation. The top Kaiser oificials, Henry J. Kaiser and his sou, Edgar, also have complained of troubles wltli j anhnontractors. For one thing, they said one subcontractor delivered 13 sets of defective aircraft wings. -The Senate hearing has de veloped testimony that a Kaiser built C-119 cost $1,347,000 as against $265,000 for one from Fair child. , Bridges recessed ' the hear ing Wednesday shortly after word of the cancellation reached the capltol. The Northern California district also got a new marshal nominee Frank O. Bell of Vallejo. He would succeed John O. Roseen who is resigning. Bell is in the furni ture business. Sexton's father was a sheriff and the new marshal nominee followed in his footsteps with election first in 1928. He was elected six times, the last two without opposition. Fugmiie, 65, liulluiml cuuuuunueF of the Salvation Army since 1944, collapsed and died Wednesday while walking near the Salvation Army's national headquarters. Commissioner Pugmire was stricken while walking from a sub way station to his office. He was dead when an ambulance arrived.
