The Oregon Council of Churches, which baa Just- completed a two- year study of why more Oregon residents don't go to church, puts the blame on those two facts. Nationally, there's a back-to church movement, with 48.2 per cent of the country's popula tion belonging to churches. In 11)26, the figure was 42.4 per cent. But In Oregon, which with Wash ington ranks at the bottom of all the states, only 23.2 per cent of the people belong to churches, which is the same percentage as in 1926. ' ' : ' These church membership iig ures include only persons over IS years old. 1 ' : .... While the Oregon Council of Churches consists of Protestant de nominations, the survey covers all Christian and Jewish religions. Oregon, which had a powerful missionary background in the early days, again will receive aid from the national church organizations In building churches. , FUNDS EXPECTED f Most of the Protestant churches of any size are conducting national drives to raise money to build new churches. A big share of this money will be spent In the West to take care of the Increased pop ulation. Oregon will get some of this money, and the Oregon Council of Churches made its survey to find out where the new churches should be buUt, and wrilch old churches should be remodeled or rebuilt. ; The survey will be given to the national church denominations to enable them to see, why Oregon needs new church construction so badly. The answer is clear: Most of the new churches will be built in ex panding population areas outside cities, and the little village church es will be given a face-lifting. Surprisingly, the survey shows religion has a stronger hold in Ore gon's cities than outsiae oi mem. In Portland, 31.9 per cent of the population belongs to churches. In the next 48 cities, the percentage is 50.9 per cent. In suburban areas it is much less, and in rural areas it is only 8.5 per cent. SMALL-RADIUS DRAW - Another somewhat surprising fact is that the churches draw their members largely from a one-mile radius of each church. - This means that in suburban areas lacking church buildings. most of the people don't go to church, althounh there are plenty of churches within five or lO.aaln- utes driving time from the homes In these areas. .- . - . But experience' already has' shown that when a cnurcn is estaonsnea in these suburban areas, it grows Hanford Tank Bidders Listed RICHLAND, Wash. W A Seattle firm was the apparent low bidder Wednesday for construction of 15 huge underground tanks to increase waste storage facilities at the Hanford atomic works. Among' most of the larger Prot estant churches, there won't be competition to see which one builds the new churches. They already are co-operating in locating new churches, making sure that two churches ' won't be established where only one could be supported. While there are more than 260 different church denominations. Oregon's church members belong mostly to 11 of tnem, including Ro man Catholic and Jewish. There were 371,212 church mem bers In the state In 1952, and only 59,139 of them belonged to churches other than the 11 largest ones. ' CATHOLICS LEAD There were 87,973 Roman Cath olics.
