Laiin Actor Seems To Have Found H'vood Secret By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD The happiest man in Hollywood? I nominate Gil bert Roland. The Latin actor seems to have found the secret of lasting youth. He readily admits to being 7. yet he has the face and figure ot a far younger man. He also has a youth ful outlook on life, but with a calm, deep philosophy that can come only with years of good living. Career-wise, he is the envy of his fellow actors. In the past five years, he has gone from picture to picture, delivering finely etched performances such as in "My Six Convicts" and 'The Bad and the Beautiful." Yet he doesn't have the rigors and the insecurity ol being a star. "I don't want to br a star." he blandly declares. "I've had It before, and I know what It's like. Let the young kids have It now." At present he Is finishing up The Diamond Queen" with Ar lene Dahl and Fernando Lamas. This week he leaves for Florida to portray a sponge fisherman in "12-Mile Reef" with Robert Wag- McKay Favors Indian Probe PORTLAND (if Secretary of the Interior Douglas McKay was quoted by the Orcgonian Wednes day as saying he would recom mend that area offices of the Bu reau of Indian Affairs be closed down. The 11 olfices throughout the U. s. are "bottlenecks" which re sult in "unnecessary expense and duplication." the paper quoted him as saying in a telephone interview. McKay said he would make his recommendation to the new Indian commissioner as soon as he is ap pointed, the Oregonian reported. The post has been vacant since March 20 when Col. Dillon S. Myer resigned. FREE IBB K..AMATH FAI.f.S. OWKtiON tier and Terry Moore. Then he goes to Spain to appear wilh Clau dette Colbert In "That Lady." which Katharine Cornell did on the stage. Of course, the picture business was not always as rosy for Roland. He was a big hit in Uie 0s. when Latfn lovers had their heyday on the screen. His star faded with the advent of the grapefrult-ln-the- (ace style of movie lover, After he got out of the Army In World War n. he rode the range In the Cisco Kid series. I "No producer wanted to hire me." he recalled. "They aald I i was a Western actor." John Huston changed all that. ! He interviewed the actor for a ! role In "We Were Strangvs." "Can you sing?" Roland replied j he couldn't. "Can you play a gui tar?" The answer was again neg ative. So Roland got Hie Job as a Cu ! ban revolutionary who played the I guitar and sang. Huston mada him I get a haircut, and the director even I wielded the scissors himself Ro land submitted to all this, and the results brought a revival of his film career. He has made 15 pic tures In the past five years, and turned down more. .- How -docs he stay so younit? "for one thing. I play tennu every day of the year." he an swered. "I have the same waist line 29 inches that I had when I started In pictures as an extra in 1925. "And then I do not worry. I do not eat myself up inside by (retting about things. That'a what ma..es people old." The third secret of his youthful. ncss was staled very aunply. "women." mm The top line Chrysler "NEW YORKER" 6-Pass.
