A Japanese cabinet council ap proved the emergency import of 370.000 tons of coal from the U. S. to keep Industry going during the strike. Kyodo News Agency re ported. The council earmarked 300,000 tons for the steel industry. The rest will be used for power gener ation. The action was the third such emergency measure. News Guild Loses Strike NASHUA, N. H. ti Members of the Nashua Newspaper Oulld ended a five-months strike at the Nashua Telegraph Wednesday and issued a statement that they had "conceded defeat." Fifteen members of Local 317, American Newspaper Oulld (CIO) went on strike July 10 after months of negotiations on a first contract. Although the strikers Included members of the editorial, adver tising, business, circulation and and maintenance staffs, the paper continued to publish without inter. ruption. Local Guild President John M Barry said the Oulld had decided to call off Its strike at a meeting of its members Tuesay night. He also stated picketing of the struck plant ended o f f I cl a 1 ly Wednesday morning. The union-management dispute concerned wages, severance pay and a Guild shop. The Guild rejected Telegraph step rate increase which would have given reporters 880 a week by June. 1063. Army io Issue Armored Shorts WASHINGTON ' The Army said Wednesday It Is ordering ar mored shorts for Its troops io Korea. Together with the armored vest the two garments will give protec tion to the entire torso. The Army said the srmored shorts resemble a priz fighter's trunks and weigh only tour pounds. The vest weighs eight pounds. Specifically designed to protect the hips, abdomen and groin, the garment haa been tentatively des ignated "armor, lower torso." It Is made of 13 layers of flexi ble, laminated nylon duck encased in a water-resistant plastic layer with an outer covering of nylon fabric. The vest, made of the same materials, has been demonstrated In Korea to deflect about 65 per cent of all types of missiles and to reduce chest and upper abdominal wounds by sbout 60 per cent.
