CHICAGO ' Hogs, cattle and

dy on the livestock market Satur
day. Heavy hog runs forced prices a
little lower this week, but demand
held up quite well and there was
a complete clearance each day.
Prices held a little above their
recent lows. Barrows and gilts
ended 10 to 15 cents lower while
sows were off 25 to 50 cents.
Receipts also were large in the
cattle section, running about 30
per cent higher than in the cor
responding week a year ago.
Prime and high choice yearlings
weighing under 1.G50 pounds sold
steady to 50 cents higher, but most
oiher sections were lower.
A combination of big runs and
lower dressed prices lorced lamb
Quotations lower lor the week.
Prices were the lowest for Decem

dropped 2 00 to $3.00. Ewes lost
around 50 cents.

GARB
I was clad In a gold and red
embroidered robe, a linen and lace
surplice, a large gold and red coat
and a high golden mitre. I carried
a bishop's curled golden crook aa
I was solemnly escorted to the
throne through the "kingdom of
toys."
It was an Impressive throne
room, with glittering, changing
colored lights, singing birds and
soft green trees,, a fountain and
a gilded throne under a big golden
canopy an a platform.
Fo' four hours I sat, shaking
hundreds of soft, little hands. I
was looked at by thousands of wide
eyes. They stared at my huge
white beard, my thick snowv mous
tache, my gold chain and glittering
diamond and ruby cross.
Tiny voices, one after the other,
said, "Bonjour. St. Nicholas" and
then. In whispers: "May I have
a car?" "I'd like a bicycle" "I
want a desk" and again and again
little girls asking for a "doll which
says mamma."
TONGUES
In bilingual Belgium saints must
be bilingual too. I had to be Santa
Clause In French and Santa Claus
In Flemish with equal fluency.
St. Nicholas was a donkey. My
donkey wasn't there. It was hsv.
Ing a rest. On the eve of eo.

etables for the donkey to eat and
St. Nicholas leaves his gifts lh the
children's shoes.
One little boy walked up to me
timidly, carrying a badly wrapped
parcel. "It's carrots for your don
key." A little boy brought his head
close and whispered: "Can you af
ford an electric train, Santa
Claus?"
Another boy couldn't get round
to saying what he wanted. I sug
gested he write: "But I have writ
ten to you," he said Indignantly.
"I am Jean, from Waterloo."
blushing behind my white beard
I said: "Sure, of course, Jean;
It's all taken care of."
A tiny baby girl walked up the
steps of my throne, hands out
stretched, looked around and whis
pered. "T love you 8t. Nicholas."
and ran away with tears sparkling
In her big brown eyes.
When It was over I walked from
my throne solemnly through ril
those toys and there I was in the
wet. cold street.
"No beard, no mitre, no Santa
Claus any more. But It all bad
been wonderful.
