W A quirk of shlitlng lr masse dumped up to i'i Inchc of snow yesterday on mountain areas of four Southern (Slates Tennessee. North Caro lina, Virginia and Kentucky par. ulyr.lPfi communications and trans portation for many hours. Despite rapid melting caused by relatively high ground tempera tures tite unexpected storm left a large area ol Ill-prepared Dixie looking like a Polar outpost. The snow blanket measured 10 Inches here early today. It was by far the heaviest tail over recorded here and possibly the heaviest ever recorded this tar soutl). But the resulting snarl in normal community living did not approach the Intensity of the three-day Ice storm which struck Tennessee and other Southern stales early in 1951. This city of 125.000 had a total full estimated oillclally at inches during the ?4-huur period yesterday. The precipitation in terms of water measured 2.32 Inches. This was the highest figure re ported from the aftected areas, but communications were still blacked out to many mountain areas to the fast early today. Early reports Included a few casualilies. A young man and woman were killed at a railroad crossing at nearby Morristown. The accident happened at the height of the suowstorm, but of ficers were not sure it could be blamed on the storm. Two women were injured, ap parently not seriously, when a store marquee fell under the weight of snow as they were wait ing for slow-moving city Buses in downtown Knoxvllle. Broken power lines brought severe discomfort to numerous families depending on electricity for heat as the temperature dropped to 35 degrees tins morn ing. Railroad crews fought against heavy odds to push principal trains through the drills hours be hind schedule. Buses and automo biles were reported stalled along hundreds of miles of highways. One train bringing the Univer sity of Kentucky loolball team here for today's game with the University of Tennessee had lq follow a walking signalman lor the last 13 miles into the city. The train halted at each signBi block while tho crewmen wonted ahead to the next to shift snow clogged automatic switches man ually. Primary hlp.hways were being cleared rapidly today. Briefly, here was the situation In other states: Kentucky Three to five Inches of snow In the southeastern moun tains. Football fans advised not to trv to make the trip to Knoxvllle. Harlan and Middlesuoro areas isolated. Virginia Four to 1J Inches of snow in southwestern mountains. Telephone and telegraph lines down. Five to six hours delay on telephone calls and similar delays in train schedules. Primary high ways clear. Few secondary roads blocked by high water, but no dangerous flood conditions. North Carolina Communica tions cleared, but patrolmen ad vise caution In western region where earlier rain Is now freezing. Snow still falling in northwestern comities early today. The Christian Democratic party Issued a pamphlet of Instructions lor delegates to Its rally here In mid-October. The party reminded members Baby Girl For Judy SANTA MONICA, Calif. W Sing er Judy Garland gave birth by Caesarean section yesterday to a baby girl. Her husband is agent Sid Luft, whom she married June W Hollister, Calif. The child weighed ( pounds, 4 ounces, and nurses described her as a "chunky baby girl who looks just like her mother." Miss Garland and luft kept their marriage secret for a few days. When the story broke ft also was disclosed that Luft. her third husband, had been handling her business affairs lor several months. Judy formerly was married to David Rose, composer and conduc tor, and lo screen director Vincent Mmnelli. She has a daughter by MlnnelU, Liza May, 5. Luft also has been married three times.
