Oregon's Slate (Statute Revision Council, almost ready to hand the legislature lla written version of all the stale laws, get paid that much. It has spent 1300.000 on Us four yesr mammoth Job, and has cut 300.000 word out of the old law. Trie council has had to work over 20,000 section of Oregon law. These laws now are contained In I he 10-volume edition of the 1B10 code, plus six fat volumes of laws passed by the past six Leglnlature. The new edition will coinprcas all I he lawa Into three volumes, 'mere also will be a one-volume in dex -and a one-volume reference to court decision and attorney gen eral's opinion on the law.,. The council will ask the Legis lature In January to adui the new code. When the Legislature docs, all of the old laws go off the book a. Besides trimming execs word age, the council's staff ha re- w.ltten many Jaws and eliminated many others. It wants the Legislature to adopt a system whereby whole new sec tion of lawa can be easily Inserted alter each Legislature. Tan full-time lawyers have done the revising. There are 22 separ ate steps a reviser has to go through In revising a tection. The lawyera have to be very careful Uiey don't change the meaning of a law. For Instance, It ha had to trim down sentences running as 'ong as too words. Here's a typical example of how the council reduce the wordnge. One law starts out: "In all elec tion precincts In which were cast one nundred (100) or more bal loi." eic. 1 The council changed it to this ' "In precinct where 100 or more ballots were cast." etc. Another law starts: "In any and all counties of this state having a population of over 300,000 inhabit ants," etc. The new version: "In counties having a population of over 300.. 000," etc. The word "Inhabitants" Is dropped,' Haley believing any body would know that 300,000 means people. h4? 0 faniwRtla fRM fair Yt & rmpltt II n .t ltiilrmmnta kyl morfl pi a not tQM Mala WORKING MEN.
