Unemployment Payments Up SALEM ifi Jobless benefits to Oreuon's unemployed last month totalled 764,782 the highest s mount for any October since 1940 the State Unemployment Compensation Commission report ed Friday. The commission said 18.005 were unemployed during the month That is 6,300 more than in September and 3,100 more than In October last year. A healthier undertone pre vailed in tne maraei, supported by higher wholesale pork prices, a good demand from order buyers and, until Friday, moderate re ceipts. Receipts of cattle were cut back sharply during the week down 35 per cent from the previous week and the smallest since July.
