Morrison wet Nursing Home Fire Kills 18 - HILLSBORO. Mo. VTi Eighteen elderly patients died last night aa tire roared through a three-story nursing home here. Most of the dead were trapped on the third floor of the stone structure. Other bodies were found a floor below. A nurse llrst discovered the blase about 5:45 p.m. as sparks and smoke came from a celling ol the first floor between the main building and an annex, QUICK SPREAD The fire spread oulcklv ud stair- waya and along corridors as atten dants tried to get the SS residents, several of them Invalids, out ol the building. HUlsboro Fire Chief Richard King said the blaze apparently began In a men's wash room on the first floor. He made no damage estimate on the main building. which he called a total loss. Voman Dies In Home Fire NEW PINE CREEK A 45-year- old ranch wife, Mrs. Velma Mutkey was burned to death In a fire that destroyed her home near New Pine Creek yesterday afternoon. The lire broke out at the bouse near noon when the woman was alone. A short time earlier she had been In New Pine Creek. Three fire trucks were sent to the scene, one from here, one from Willow Ranch and a local fire dis trict rig. but all arrived too late to save the house. Mrs. Mulrey's badly burned body was found in the basement. She may have been trapped and over come by the smoke and flames without a chance to get out. Rer husband. Harold Mulker. and 5-year-old son Vickie were some distance away when they spotted uw lire ana ran to uie house too late to save anything. Mulkey said the fire probably started in the at tic from defective wiring. He said there was no insurance.
