I . -Wytltl He naa some sage i-wiim,,, ihe serious difficulties of being funny. But I think his most apt remark was: "You can't be boff every minute." I am a lover of the titter, snick er, giggle, yock, guffaw, belly laugh and boffola. What amazes me Is the fact that I can "It through an hour-long TV comedy i-how and not crack a smile. Even Jhows making their fall debuts, there Is little on TV that Is really funny. I think Brother Berle hit on the trouble. "You can't be boff every minute." Nor perhaps every week. And maybe not every month. In the 18th century, humorists like Mark Twain could write a few worka and live off them for the rest of their lives. Then the focus ot humor shifted to the vaudeville stage. Comics could operate Ihe same act for 10 or 20 years with out wearing out their welcomes on the various circuits. But the age of mechanised en tertainment spelled trouble for humor. Radio provided an almost Insat iable appetite for comedy, stars hired large stables of writers. The end result was an Impersonal, machine-age type of comedy that provided little laughter. Now that the novelty Is wearing off TV; It Is experiencing the ssme dearth of real comedy. Comics are spreading themselves too thin. Red Skelton la doing a weekly TV show, another on radio and shooting a movie for theaters at the same time. Bob Hope will be doing a dally radio show, a weekly one, plus occasional TV shows and movies. Milton Berle holds the TV screen for an hour three times a month. It's Impossible for them lo be tunny all ot the time. Even the great Jimmy Durante doesn't al- ways hit the mark, and he'i on TV only once a month. There's one hopeful note: the age of alapatick appears to be passing in TV. The atory ahowe are taking over. On the heela of "I Love Lucy," we tlnd auch new comers aa Orile and Harriet, Our Miss Brooks, the Joan Davis show, "My Little Margie," etc., etc. Also the wonderful Mr. Peepers show, which should be revived.
