The arrests, the resolution said. were an "attempt to silence oppo sition to the bi-partisan war poli cy" of the United States. Delegates gave unanimous In dorsement to the Progressive pres idential ticket Vincent Hailinan of San Francisco for president and Mrs. Charlotta Bass, San Francisco Negro, for vice president. Roy Stauffer of Eugene was elected chairman. Other officers: Mrs. Helen Neuenschwander, Fort land, secretary; Don Brown, Coos Bay, national committeman, and Sue Driscol, national committee woman. Truman May Attack Press WASHINGTON (J) Ben. Frank Carlson R-Ka& says he has learned from reliable sources that President Truman plans to subject several newspapers to a thorough government probe in an attempt to retaliate for their revelations of scandals in his administration. 'It smacks of strong attempts to browbeat the press," Carlson said in a statement. Carlson, a supporter of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Repub lican nominee for president, said he was told that Truman plans to have the Justice Department sub poena files, letters, memoranda and records of newspapers during the closing weeks of the political campaign. "The sending of a horde of gov ernment agents into the newspa pers offices during an election campaign may be Truman's idea of silencing opposition," Carlson said. "It will not work. "He will learn on Nov. 4 that the revelations bv the free press of the United States have com pelled our peoople to demand a change." The first newspaper Involved in such an investigation, Carlson said, was the Kansas City Star. He said all of the Star's records and files have been subpoenaed. In Kansas City. Roy A. Roberts, president of the Kansas City Star, said it was true that the govern ment had subpoenaed all the news papers financial records, minute books and files covering a period of 25 years. Reds Fight Over Woman RANGOON, Burma Wl A Bur mese "Helen of Troy" is blamed for a clash between Communists In the Meiktila area of central Burma that cost 23 lives. The story, as related here: Bo Kyi Saing, a commander of the Communist rebels, fell In love with Ma Saw Yi, a pretty school teacher. They ran away and lot married. But duty called and Bo Kyi Saing had to go underground. Time palled on Ma Saw Yi's hands. Pretty soon Yin Maung Yin, another Red military leader, found favor In her eyes. Then Bo Kyi Saing returned to his wife for a visit. Ylng Maung Yin was out on Red military busi ness. He heard about the visit and marched down to take Bo Kyi Saing captive. A court of village elders sentenced Bo Kyi Saing to death. When word of this drifted back to Bo Kyi Salng's followers they vowed revenge. In a battle Ylng Mnung Yin and 18 of his men were killed. Four on the other side also were slain.
