'Hiere are Is pupils, and a happy lot are they, with their new desks and chairs and their new teacher, Mrs. Anne Sloan, from Oranta Pass. Sept. 4, the girls and boys had a glass picking up contest on the school grounds and the losers had to furnlth a party for the winning side. T1ie glria were the losers so they held a party for the boys Friday allernoon, during afternoon recess. The school grounds are now minus two lnrge boxes of broken glass. I am sorry to report that Avon Derrick was seriously Injured Sept. 3, about 4 p.m , while stacking hay on his ranch near Fort Rock. A cable broke on the hay lift and caused the load to fall on Avon. Tile extent of his Injuries were a broken pelvis bone, dis located shoulder and many bruises over his entire body. Avon was taken to the St. Charles Hospital In Bend, by the Owl Ambulance Service, which picked him up here at Fort Rock. Ernie Slelgleder and Wendal Mont cal were with him at the time of the accident and brought bim to Fort Rock where they met the ambuluncc. Avon will have to be In the hos pital for about six weeks. Every ono here wishes Avon a speedy recovery. Tiie quilling meeting was held at the home of Mabel Morehouse Aug. 27. Tncre were six ladles present. The Macdoel Grammar School opened this year with a.record at tendance of 50 pupils to start. More students are expected. It Is anticipated that the eiehth graders from the Mt. Hebron school will attend the Macdoel school to relieve the burden of the Mt. Hebron- teacher. Mr. and Mrs. Darell Van Lanen who taught in Macdoel last year have again taken up their duties. Additions at the grade school this year are a new merry-go-round and one swing. There has been discus sion as lo have an orchestra this rear but at this point has not ma terialized. Mr. Houston Yates has taken over the duties as Janitor and bus driver. A new bus is expected to be delivered In the near luture. Of definite interest in the Mac doel area was the starting of the construction on the new telephone exchange building. The foundation was started on Aug. 20. Air. ttoDeri H. Edgar, Dorris telephone com pany owner said that with good luck the building should be com pleted in about two weeks and that the telephone system should be in stalled in the Macdoel townsue oy npcembpr of this vear. 4-H Club members of Butte Val ley were well represented at the Siskiyou county fair Aug. 22, 23, 24. Competing from Macdoel and Mt. Hebron were livestock, members Jimmie Noakes, second year club work, who netted $412.50 lor his steer which was purchased by his grandfather, J. D. Stevenson of the Meiss ranch. Frank Cross, third year club work, $319.20 and Dennis Cross, first year club woik. S317.30. All placed lor second honors and received SU each. Bob Ohling, livestock leader, came to Macdoel about three years ago. He is well qualified as leader and has had a great deal of experience with club work in Polk County and was county agent there for some time before coming to Macdoel to live. Shir ley Dixon, fifth year member en- tcred seven exhibits. She was awarded five blue ribbons and two red. Her exhibits were a wool skirt, pajamas, cotton school dress and a blouse. Shirley Dixon is to be the Butte Valley delegate at the 4-H conven tion to be held at Davis, Aug. 27 30. Siskiyou County is to be repre sented by two delegates, one from each community. Three adult chop. erones and one dress review winner. Shirley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Dixon. She Is 14 years old and will be a freshman in high school this year. This is her fifth year In 4-H work, a part of which was done in Oregon. Butte Valley club pays her expenses. Last year Shirley was chosen as dele gate to Davis.
