Italian Atom Research Slim If THERE'S A MATINEE J I EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR I CONTINUOUS - gy ' from 1.45 MILAN (.A Italy has started Its research for an experimental atom ic stockpile in mostly basement quarters next to a "room for rent" sign. It is modest beginning with 'home made" heavy water, a tiny quantity ot locally obtained mineral uranium, eight professors, some 30 student research assistants and about sioo.ooo. Unlike the treat secret Ameri can atomic cities, visitors need no special passes and there are no gun-orlstnng guards at the doors of the CISE (Centro Information! Studi Esperienze) laboratories, the organization for Italian atomic study. The center Is financed by a dozen of Italy's major industries. Profes sors directing the work say that the S100.000 is about one one-hun dredth of what they need for really aarancea experiments. But they take hope from Increas ing government Interest at Rome where late in July the research was placed under control of a gov ernment agency on nuclear energy. Minister pietro campuu of com merce and industry announced that Italy expects to receive financial aid from the United States to help wnn me stuaies. Goal of the research center Is to establish a sufficient atomic stockpile to permit experiment and stuaies. Directors saia tney aireaay have set up the necessary equip ment to get the stockpile started. Essential "heavy water" is being made electrically. Metallic uran ium is being extracted from uran ium-bearing ores which are found in Italy but not In quantity suffi cient to justify normal mining. Joel McCrea Family Shuns Excessive Movie Publicity Br BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD i Some Joker tacked on Joel McCrra s dressing room a sign reading "Millionaire's Row." Everyone on the movie set got a laugh out of It, especially Mc Crea. It's pftistble that he Is a millionaire, since he has been making good money for 30 years In the movies and Is reputed to be (oxy with his dough. But one thing Is certnln: He doesn't act like a millionaire. Nor has he brought up his two boys to act like a rich man's sons. In fact, they have been so shielded from the limelight that only this week did McCrea allow the first picture of one of them to be pub lished. The reason for the photo graph was that the oldest boy, Jody, 17. Is appearing with his pop In "Lone Hand." "Hint's true." Joel said. "There haven't been any picture of the boys published since they were babies. The only photos we have taken of them were for the fam ily a I b u m. My wife (actress Frances Dee) had a theory about that. "She objected to children being used In publicity at an age when tliey were not able to make their own decisions about It. That wasn't being fair to them, she reasoned. She also objected to children being forced to live In the shadow of their parents' fame. "And she was absolutely right. I have seen it happen to too many kids nt famous people. They wind nil Willi a complex about bourn second brt and make mr.v-e.i ol i tneir lives. I wantea my uoya to stund on their own two fret." The McCrcns soeni to hnve done a good Job along those lines on Jotly and David, who la 16. They purpasely kept the boys out of the Beverly Hills social whirl, where they would be competing with othri flint children. The MrCrra sons have spent most of their lives on i the Mccrea ranrn. lenrning ine cattle business from the ground up. "Hie boys have even aatd they don't waul me to leavt any money to them." Joel added. "They tell me I can give II all to an orphan age I have been helping over the yeurs. At any rate, I haven't set up anv trust funds for thrm to got at certain atjes. I think that would be a bad thing for a kid." Now Jody has been bitten by the acting bug. After years of Indif ference about his father's proles slon, he suddenly has expressed a desire to get Into It. Joel gave him a chance to break Into the game in "Lone Hand." "I gave the kid a part and let him double In some riding scenes," remarked director George Sherm an. "He's plenty good." The proud father agrees, and has given his blessing to Jody's new enthusiasm. "He's all excited about It." said Joel. "Now he plans to enroll at Pomona College and take the same drama course that Robert Taylor and I took (here. I'm nut discouraging him. Acting Isn't a bad business; It's dona all liglil lor me." Joel admitted that neither of his smia has ever been a great Ian ol his. "They Ilka me better than Ran dolph Scott but not as well a Gary Cooper," ha shrugged, Capsule Review:' "What PUce Glory" la a happy throwback to another war ami another era. The wolfish brother role in "Death of a Salesman'' snapped Mitchell's career back in place, but, he says, "Darryl Zanuck was the only producer in town who really gave me a chance."
